I broke the key-ignition-switch mounted on the steering colum.

Questions:

Do I need to remove the steering wheel to fix this?

Has anyone done this?

Do you have any tips?

Thanks in adavnce for the input.

Larry

Yep, remove steering wheel, lockplate, turn signal cam (just unscrew it and move out of the way, then remove the screw that holds in the key tumbler and remove. Pretty simple.

Get you a steering wheel puller. Also, don't do it late a night with a 12 pack and decide you need to disconnect a bunch of wires with a screwdriver and a hammer down at the bottom of the steering column.

One more thing, don't get the cheap tumbler from O'reily's, it's got the wrong amount of teeth on it and your key positions will be off. You need to get you a manual if you don't already have one. I think mine's a Haines and its usually got pretty good step by steps in it

Steering wheel puller-check
Get 12 pack- check
Hammer-check
screwdrvier-check

I think I have the Chiltons, I didn't even think to look in it.

Ya, O'reilly's has a cheap one, and they have the AC Delco part also, I will go with the AC Delco.

Thanks

yeah i broke mine too. ended up doing a bunch of wiring instead of fixing the real problem. now i've got an ignition in my cig lighter, fuel cutoff switch, and a separate key for unlocking my steering wheel!

fwiw, if you need to drive, you can start/stop your engine by getting the whitish switch off the top of the steering column (behind the triangle shaped deal behind the dash). to get to this, drop the steering wheel down a bit by removing the collar that holds it to the dash. then you can make due w/ a screw driver by pushing the lever back and forth in the switch.

Thanks Colby.

A friend of mine showed me that little trick. Good stuff.
