Some of ou guys have emailed me and messaged here and I appreciate it. Had a run of bad luck resulting in me having to take a job overseas for a few months to get back on a level keel here. In the process I sold off both of my project trucks. Oh well, they come and they go. I kept my mountain truck however, she's a keeper.

Been scouring craigslist for a week now looking for that "Right" deal on a new project. I can say that I now have her back home with me. A rusty, crusty 1981 K-20. So here's the story. Owner had it listed for 2800 but it was 5 hours away from me. I talked on the phone with him for a bit and he tells me about all the rust in the bed, which I wasn't going to use anyway. Supposed to have a new 350 and a 4 speed with the 208. We are talking on the phone for the second time and he tells me that while he was playing with the truck the night before he pulled the front end apart.....

I had no idea what that meant but asked if it still ran and drove? He says "Oh yeah, it just doesn't go into 4 wheel drive anymore and if you think you might want it, I'll take 1k bucks for it today". Needless to say that was my cue to get in the truck. Loaded a few tools and my girlfriend and we were off. Got there a little after dark in the rain. Looked it over and it's a great looking truck. Has a spanking NEW rough country 4" lift and tires that have not been on there a month. Look it over and notice the front drive shaft has pulled apart. That's what he called " torn apart". I ask if the price is still 1k and pay him, quickly. Get in the old girl and start for home about 8pm. Get 10 miles down the road and the worst of the worst happens. The wiper motor gives up the ghost. 15 miles from any sort of town, in the dark, in the rain. I decide to "ace Ventura" the truck to a pull out and realize that there isn't a drivers window crank! Damn it, foiled again. I continue easing along and stopping to wipe the windshield. Get to the little town and of course there is no parts store open. I stopped in a little truck stop and grab some rainex and hose the windows down with it. Find a little hotel with a diner and call it a night. Get up the next morning, parts run and the wiper is working like a champ. Although I did put the arm on wrong and so now the wipers stop up instead of flat. It was 1 degree outside so I gave a shit, I just wanted them to work! We fuel up and Shag en ze arse. Directly in the worst white out storm of the season on Rogers pass. Dropped down down to 35 MPH for about 50 miles in and out of the town of Lincoln and over the pass. Why 35 MPH you ask? The road was frozen solid with negative temps. I hit. A patch of black ice and the whole truck slid sideways in the middle of a 2 lane with traffic coming....that's why. So after 8 hours on the road, with the required stop at Harbor Freight along the way we got her back to the house. Couldn't make it up the driveway when I got here, damn driveshaft pulled apart again. So I guess the first stop is the drive shaft shop to get a longer front shaft.

I'll be robbing a bunch of parts from my parts 84 suburban for this truck. Tilt column, hydroboost brakes as well as the captains chairs and console from the blurb. At least that's where I'll start. I want something a little different going on this one. Might do a 5.3 or 8.1l fuel injected motor. I've been seeing a few lately for sale reasonable and it's not my normal diesel but hey, it'll do.

So I guess you wont need those '71 Suburban parts I have then huh ?..

Glad you made it back in the truck, sounds like a scary trip...

Welcome back, @Vombrown.

When you have a moment, I still have questions about what valve cover fits with that ATS turbo kit. Looks like neither the stock 6.2 nor 6.5 covers is readily compatible.

I still have those valve covers that came off that engine. They are a foot deep in snow but I'm sure they are still here. If you want I'll just send those to you.

Busy morning, I put feelers out on a NV4500, 5.3L with 20k miles on the clock and I already have questions...

My go to transfer case is always the 205. Now then, I know the 4500 can be adapted to the 205 but I wonder how the stock 241c would work out. Same guy has the 5 speed/transfer case combo and I confess that I know very little about them. Other than having one or two in a stock application. The 5.3L will be relatively stock. Maybe a small cam but nothing major.

A 241 on a GM NV4500 will be dropping on the driver side. Backwards of what your truck will want.

241 is great as long as you protect it from bashing on the rocks...

That would save me some headache. The 6.5 cover wound up being too tall, and the 6.2 cover is too short to add an oil return without either hitting the rockers or trying to fit into the gap between them. I'm curious where ATS placed it.

In my looking I found something pretty unique. It's a step side bed with tool boxes mounted to the outside of the fenders to resemble a service body. Now I asked a LOT of questions about this setup and apparently it was available in the 80's. Aftermarket of course but still, really cool. It needs a little work but it might be a great setup for me. Especially on the rusty 81. The bed is shot and I need a replacement. I would typically go straight to a flat bed as they are dime a dozen here. This step side/tool bed is just unique enough that I like it. I didn't get any pics of it but I will go pick it up next week and take some then. Once the weather here stabilizes a little. Right now it's bitter....-2 outside.

Here are a couple pics of the only thing I could find online that is similar to the bed I am describing. I have personally never seen anything like it. The fenders on the step side were removed and replaced with these tool boxes. THis one is on a 70's c-10 but according to the owner of the one I am looking at this one was bought new in 78-79.

Celsius....that's Canada talk. I feel like if anyone lives farther north than we do on this continent they are a glutton for punishment. We are essentially southern Canada here by about 180 miles.

Found a 205 transfer case for the truck so I think I'll keep the 4 speed mated to the new 205 with a 5.3l. Going to pick the 5.3L and 205 up this weekend. So I guess that settles it. Only issue is that I need an intake, wiring harness and computer for the 5.3l. Ah well, it couldn't be easy.
