I'm back! With a new project

10 spline or 32?

Looking forward to this build. Much sexier than 4.3 V-6 tech. :saweet:

It "should" be a 32 spline. I am having the guy verify it now. It's out of a late 79 "trailering special" so it should be the same as my 81. It is close enough to the change that I am having him verify it for me. He does have a SM465 as well, so if I have to I might take the whole thing.

When I have everything here I will start an actual build thread. This one should go rather quickly. I have to hunt parts for the 5.3L in case you guys reading can contribute. I need intake, fuel rails, wiring harness and computer. Once they are all gathered it's just a matter of slapping it in and bolting in the 205. I have a line on a K-30 Dana 60 that I am hoping to have in hand next week.

I also have a line on a set of 37" military dura walls. 100 percent tread that I believe I can trade for. I am wondering if they will fit 4" lift with cutout finder flares in the front. Rear won't matter as the bed is being removed this week. I have a new bed coming for it as previously mentioned.

79 4 speed = 10 spline .

and i have a stock cable throttle harnness and ecm from a 99-00 4.8 . drop me a pm .

78 was the change over year. Could have been either for that year. 79 is on the other side of the split (according to the technical data).

i tore down an all orignal never touched 80k30 years ago . it was 10 spline.
That's the biggest problem with Chevrolet. They clearly define when they change things over and then don't do it...LOL. My truck is an 81 with a 208, I'm nearly positive it's a 32 spline....don't know that I have ever seen a 10 spline np208. Well, I guess we'll have to wait and see what he comes up with. I can get the sm465 with the 205, no issue there I was just hoping to run what I had instead of swapping everything out.

I run 37s with about 5 inches of lift. I rub

Which truck? Reason I ask in on my k-10 with 4" the military tires rubbed occasionally. This k-20 with 4" looks like it has 6" of lift. I want to cutout the front fenders, there's rust there anyway. I need it to sit as low as possible and still clear enough to get chains on them if I need it.

In my looking I found something pretty unique. It's a step side bed with tool boxes mounted to the outside of the fenders to resemble a service body. Now I asked a LOT of questions about this setup and apparently it was available in the 80's. Aftermarket of course but still, really cool. It needs a little work but it might be a great setup for me. Especially on the rusty 81. The bed is shot and I need a replacement. I would typically go straight to a flat bed as they are dime a dozen here. This step side/tool bed is just unique enough that I like it. I didn't get any pics of it but I will go pick it up next week and take some then. Once the weather here stabilizes a little. Right now it's bitter....-2 outside.

@NorCalKid
Has one of these beds you speak of.

Thanks man, I read that whole thread as he's also doing the LS swap that I will do this spring summer. Don't know how I missed it. Those beds are fairly rare. I can't remember ever seeing one until the other day. To me it seems like the best of all worlds as it has full bed usage, isn't wider than the cab and still has tons of storage. Which is a pretty big deal to me. I can envision a rack over the bed with an expanded steel rack above it for carrying extra stuff. I also think a side opening tail gate/tire carrier would be cool on it. This one needs a bumper anyway so I might as well build a heavy duty unit the way I want it.

465/208 are all 32 spline but 465/205 were 10 spline until 84/85
78/79 was the d44/10bolt change as well as the tub change with a footwell for the rear passengers and fold and tumble seat.
I could be wrong, but I rarely am :)

So...to get a 32 spline NP205 behind my 81 32 spline sm465, what I am looking for? I am thinking it's the automatic transmission that has the 32 spline np205 but what about the adapter housing to mate the two?

No adapter housing to mate any round pattern transfer case to a 32 spline 465.

The 205 came in 32 spline behind both the 465 and the TH400.

If your SM465 has the long adapter on the back (with the 6-bolt pattern on it), you already have the adapter required for any 6-bolt 32-spline transfer case. So you should be good to go.

I have the adapter for 32 spline sm465 with the 205.
I also have the 205
