Okay, these may be dumb questions, I'll admit but, I am getting myself very confused.:doah: Here's the deal:
I have an 87 GMC Jimmy with SM465/208 (32 spline long output shaft, long adapter). I also have an O.R.D. short 32 spline output shaft and short adapter waiting to go in it. So, in order to run that shorter output, I would have to get the tranny fully taken apart (might as well rebuild it anyway). But, in order to save time, I'd probably rather go ahead and buy a different SM465 and have it rebuilt with the output shaft, that way, everything can be done at once in terms of tearing the Jimmy apart. So, that's where I get confused!

1. Is the case the same on the long and short adapter 465's?
2. Can a long adapter tranny be drilled/tapped to accept a short adapter?
3. If I have to get a short adapter tranny, is it compatible with my hydro clutch stuff?
4. If I have to get an earlier tranny to have the correct bolt pattern to run the short adapter, what years do I need to be looking at?
2. Short adapter is called a "figure 8" right? That's what it looks like.

Sorry for all the questions, it's just confusing the snot outta me! Thanks!:D

I am by no means a 465 expert, but I do know a bit about the t-cases. I think on the trans end the adaptor is the same. It is the t-case side where you run into figure 8 or round.

Hydro clutch stuff is in the bellhousing which is removable and can be changed to any 465 AFAIK

As far as the figure 8 being redrilled for the 208 round pattern you can do that.

Well if you're looking for a figure 8 10-spline short shaft tranny, they are everywhere. You'll find one in almost any truck that had a 465/205, and they're super common. Also , the hydro stuff will swap over, no problem.

Went digging on ORD, where he said it came from.

GM SM465 4 speed Manual Transmission:
If you have an SM465 transmission there are 3 ways to mate it to the NP203.

1: Use a factory configuration. GM mated the NP203 to the SM465 in 1973-1975 using the 10 spline output in the 465, a 10 spline female input in the NP203 and a 4.25" adapter housing between the two. This configuration was used in a wide range of GM trucks but is somewhat rare. Problems are the 10 spline connection tends to wear in the long term and it's difficult to find. Positives would be the short length and the ability to use the common 10 spline output in the transmission.

2: Use a SM465 that was originally mated to an NP208 transfer case. This 465 will have a 32 spline output shaft with a 8 3/8" adapter housing. You'll use a NP203 gearbox with a 32 spline input gear and the face of the 203 drilled and tapped with the GM round bolt pattern to match up to the factory 208 adapter housing. This works very well if you have the available length in the vehicle since the parts are commonly available and the 32 spline connection is very strong and durable.

3. Use the factory SM465 to NP203 adapter housing with ORD's new 32 spline SM465 output shaft and a 32 spline input gear in the NP203. This allows the shortest overall length with the highest strength, most durable spline connection.

im curious, whats the length from bell bolt to t-case mounting with the adapter? if i got one, it would be going in an s10, and i want to compare it to my stock trans i have now.
