I'm having a serious wtf moment, here....

so you can swap your, say 70s pickup to tbi and they will test you based on tbi imissions? for what year tbi? are all tbis tested the same 87-95?

likewise, if a 6.0 liter is swapped in out of say an 04, do they test you based on 2004 imissions standards?

if you have a diesel, do you even go to the smog test station?

First: any vehicle 75 or older does not get smogged.
Any diesel before 98 does not get smogged.
76 and up gas and 98 and up diesel get smogged.
When you put an engine in from a newer truck, your new requirements are the newer engine requirements.
If you have a gas engine and you put a diesel engine in, you get changed to diesel and if it's 97 or older you don't get smogged there after, but it's not legal to put a gas engine in a diesel truck without meating the gas engine requirements for smog so since it's popular to have a diesel truck with a gas engine to escape the smog, they are starting to look under the hood of diesel badged trucks.
Some guys have rebadged them gas so they don't raise any flags.
I had trucks that were diesel and people bought them with bad engines or without engines to put gas engines in them.
I don't care what they do, but I wouldn't do it.
In fact I am collecting diesel engines and putting one in each vehicle I have, even the older ones that are not required to smog.

They test off the engines model year, unless its an aftermarket tbi (projection etc) that is C.A.R.B. compliant. So a 2001 6.0 when certified by referee will be subject to 2001 emissions requirements.

If you swap a 97 and older diesel no smog requirements, if its a 98 and newer then you have visual inspections right now, until the new diesel sniffers are ready to go.

here in portland 74 and older gas rigs are exempt. not sure on all the diesel stuff, like i didn't know you could do a diesel swap and then be expempt from there on out. thats kinda cool.

my k5 is tbi. hopefully they don't start messing with those imissions standards too

Exactly! sorry my last pst was in process before your posted, didnt mean to repeat!:dunno:

Swap everything to 97 or older 12V cummins and have a nice day!:waytogo:

my guess is the emissions reg peeps are in bed with the auto makers. and its not so much a polution thing. its that they want people to buy new cars and trucks. what better way to squeeze out all the old inventory than to tighten the smog regs. most folks don't work on their cars. they'll have it hauled off for scrap and buys something newer.

thats my conspiracy theory on it all :D

Exactly.
And it's not a theory, it's reality.
That is why CA has a visual to pass even if you pass the sniffer you could fail for having a non CARB certified part, and to get the certificate, the company must pay big bucks.
So it's all about money.
If they cared about the environment, they wouldn't care what you use as long as it passed the sniffer.
And if a company doesn't bribe the government, they can't sell their parts in CA.

Def. in bed together! A few years back a friend and I started a company called AFI (alternate Fuel Innovations) had multiple products that increased fuel economy and decreased emissions (all were tested and prove) However could not get a C.A.R.B # wihtout serious cash, and they would only allow the parts to be purchased and installed by a certified C.A.R.B. installer....The parts worked off hydrogen generation theory and were very successful but the governemtn doesnt like the fuel mileage increase #'s that were present. We even had our shop suspiciously robbed. Yet the only thing that was taken was AFI documentation, and prototypes that were at the shop (shop was a diesel repair shop and had hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment, yet none was touched! However I had the originals of the paperwork and working prototype installed on my personal vehicle so we didnt really loose anything.

So this may be a dumb question, I know it is off subject from the OP, but couldn't you and your AFI sell you products to other states that don't need C.A.R.B bullcrap? I would imagine someone in another state would invest so that California could miss out on giving you grief.

However there are rumors that CHP are starting to carry passive sniffers to detect vehicles that are out of pipe emissions for their vehicle.

I can see it now.....

4-5 cop cars..... guns drawn on a truck at an intersection.........helicopters hovering overhead...

DRIVER!!!! get out of the truck and on the ground now!!!!!!!!

your timing is 3° off !!!

only in Cali.....

No it's only for those who put gas engine in a diesel truck, or those who pass the SMOG test then go back and put all their performance part and drive it for 2 years till the next test.
I know guys that race their cars and do this every two years. :doah:

thats too much work :eek1:

All my buddies just pay 3-400 for a smog and leave their Turbo'd Jap motor 3in no catted exhaust setup on all the time.

You get caught by johnny law they send you to the Ref at the B.A.R.

Just skip the ref, pay the $500 non compliance fee and your back on your way.

Great system, :doah:

So you can run a non smog motor and just have to pay $500? Is that per yr? I want to do that.

No, you need to find someone willing to risk their smog licsence to do an illegal smog for you for your regular bi annual smog check. Most peole charge 3-500 bucks.

Then on the chance that a cop pulls you over, for whatever reason, and asks you to pop your hood and finds that your motor is xxx or missing xxx and writes you a modified smog device, or other ticket then you get sent to the Smog Referee.

Now when you go to court for that ticket, and you didnt get passed off by the ref, they charge you 500 bucks and the ticket is paid and you are done.

So if your lucky/carefull you wont get pulled over and hassled, and only have to find that smog hookup every 2 years.

Glad I have family in Blythe, CA. One of the counties(Riverside) that doesnt have to smog biannually in some zipcodes.

Havent had to do that yet. 225000 Mile 5.7TBI still runs super clean.

Well the $500 is a twist on the law.
In CA you have to pass a test, but if your cost gets up to $500 and you still can't pass smog, they let you go another 2 years.
Which proves all they want is the money, why would they let you go 2 years with a poluting vehicle if they really cared about the polution.

So, I need $500 in smog related receipts, huh? ...

Tell me more...

Does my MSD box, and new ignition components, etc., count?
Cuz I've spent waaaay more than $500 "getting it ready to pass Smog."

No bullsh*t....

I can't tell you for sure, but the smog guy I believe can.
I know the test cost is counted, but I think it's only after a failed smog test that the expenses are counted, but do not quote me on it.
Maybe you can go on the CA website and find out.:dunno:
I do know the $500 limit and since I never reached it, I didn't investigate more.
