I'm tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

There is a harbor Freight behind Florin Mall on Florin Road of course, swing by there and pick up one of their cheap electronic hoods. I have an expensinve one and spend 8 hours a day in it. If I were only piddling around I would at least pick up a cheap un. Course I'm spoiled now and would never go back to a old solid lens.

boots

ps you can pick up a hood wiht no lenses there (non electronic for 4 bucks right now til the 24th acording to the sale flyer I got in the mail

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

If I were you, I'd install the bigger tires (which are already on 6-lug wheels) and use your existing axles....

You've got PLENTY of work ahead of you just to get the tire clearance you'll need and to get the suspension "softer" and more flexy, you've also got shock issues to solve in that same timeframe.

It's not as sexy as going 1-Ton right away, but don't forget you've still got driveshafts to buy (Have you priced a 1-Ton CV-Style shaft yet?!) and the 1-Ton conversion is a LOT of work that you don't seem setup for yet (tools, workspace & expertise)

Keeping it 1/2-Ton and getting all the details sorted out will make the swap to 1-Ton a lot more satifying later on....in my opinion, trying to do ALL of that stuff at once is going to keep you off the trails and away from the "fun" for too long. There's plenty of stuff to enjoy (gently) with 38's and 1/2 ton running gear.

yeah what greg said /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

I've gotta agree with Greg here. Get everything else all set up for the 38s and then start gathering parts to go with the one ton stuff. I am doing basically the same thing that you're talking about, swapping to one ton, doing the crossover and all that fun stuff all at once. I'm not even revamping the suspension right now, I decided that it was just too much all at once. The axles, steering, driveshafts, OBA, trying to clear bigger tires and all the miscellaneous acouterments that go along with all of that stuff is plenty for me right now. Let me tell you, it's alot of work and it sure ain't cheap. I'm going on 6 months right now, although I'm moving at a pretty leisurly pace. Not to mention I have a garage, a fair selection of tools and good mechanical ability and experience. I can't imagine trying to do this stuff with any less than I have now.

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

well, sawzalling the fenders etc. is all you need to do to "fit" the tires.

I think a 30 project during the spring or summer is possible. Possible if the axles are clean, ready and assembled, everything is ready to go and the axles go in first (duh).

you can sling axles under a truck in a day. Shaggy did it with the rest of us playing CalTrans. The x-over is pretty straight forward, its adjusting steering radius and steering stops that i don't (and didn't) do. Shocks are pretty easy, just start taking off some of the 32 or so and get down to 4.

i usually just wait till i feel inspired and knock out a few projects at once. a decent colection of tools will get you far. i usually have to run out and buy 1 tool each time i do something major. I just accept it. so it can be done, IMHO

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

That's exactly how I got so many tools /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Every major project needs a new tool and I justify it by saying to myself, instead of paying someone to do it, I pay myself with a nice tool.
I am still on my 1/2 ton axles going to 38 and keeping them until I have all the parts gathered up and the details worked out. then I will have a break and change everything over.
I also have an advantage, I have another truck that I can use while doing this project.

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

The ram assist will not help cure the design flaws of the original sterring.

If you get it flexed up, you can still lose your range of motion - that is independant of ram assist.

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THE Blazer???

I am surprised no one has asked this already.

[/ QUOTE ]

I did.

That is the point I agree with - all this talk about crossover and hydro steering and no idea what she wants out of the rig............come awn Steph, that is the first step! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

Ok, i'll break this down scientifically for all of you.

The previous owner did it because he was using it to tow a boat and he liked to drive in the sand. I plan to do neither of these things anymore.

So, a relaxing trip down to Pismo not withstanding, it looks like building a prerunner is not was Steph is looking for.

It'll be off road too. I'm not going 1 ton to crawl mall curbs for sure...

[/ QUOTE ]

So curbs are out, not too much mud around here, except in the winter months, so i don't think Steph will be fabbing any chain drives or mounting her radiator in the bed.
It sounds like you are building a trail rig. One to handle 4 rated trails, so that you can hit the rocks & trails a bit and get the pucker factor but not doing Upper Helldorado.

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

well, steph sounds to me you do have a plan and clues about how to get there /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

you know you are not wanting a street wheeler or mall crawler, but the real deal, so you have gotten the plan together and started gathering parts (clues) to make your blazer a capable off-roader, i know it is a long, drawn out process, but gathering the parts is the fun part, and finally putting them on is the fun part, just take a deep breath and relax, most everyone on here that has went through this type of build-up, know that it does not happen overnight, especially with most of us being the class that has to work hard for our money, and when you do get ready sounds like you have a great support group out there to help ya'

i hate to see ya' down, i wish there was more women involved in this sport /forums/images/graemlins/pimp1.gif

I could have 2 wives, one to cook and clean and one to play and build trucks with!

[/ QUOTE ]

i just want one to play and build with /forums/images/graemlins/pimp1.gif forget the house when we could be out wheelin' /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

if the blazer's rockin... /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

My burb turns 38.5s just fine with stock steering.
As for shocks, single would be best for flex.

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

What options do I have for drive shafts? This is my big thing I am concerned with now... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

well, i think your driveshafts will be fine, you can use the front and just get the crossover joint for the rear, then as time permits you can always upgrade as the funds to do so come in, you are still running your 700/208 correct, another option on the rear would be go to a junkyard and get a rear driveshaft for 3/4 ton pickup and have it cut down and rebalanced; and last option, move to the fort worth area and i'll help you get it on the road and go wheeling /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: I\'m tired of having no plan and being basically clueless....

Ok, so I can use the shafts I have now with a bit of work until I can save up for others... which is what I wanted to know. I'm just trying to write this all down and really plan this out. I don't want to get caught half way through and realize I don't have enough money to finish.

And hey I was supposed to be in Dallas a few days for work conference. But they swapped me to go else where. But this summer I plan to go there for a few days to hang with Lara. If that happens I'll let ya know! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

New Spice 35 spline outer shafts
New 35 spline Spicer drive flanges
New axle joints
New 1410 spicer yoke with u bolts
Fresh kingpin seals and plastic bushings
All seals in good shape
1.25 od .313 wall DOM tie rod with New 1 Ton tie rod ends
New 2.5x8 Hydro Cylinder installed on axle/tie rod
Brakes ground to clear 15 inch wheel with 3.5 bs

[/ QUOTE ]

Do they make a conversion u-joint to go from 1/2 ton to a 1410? You might have to swap in a stock yoke.
