Inner bed wall removal

I knew mine was heading there. I plan to fully box the frame. Replace the rocker boxes with rectanglur tube structure that is tied together with a full cage.

Right now I am trying to complete all of the major body work. Once that is done, to include the rocker box replacement, I will remove the body and start on the chassis. Once it is boxed with new and more cross-members, I will start get the drive-train located and mocked-up for supports. That will include a change to a 700R4 mated to my NP205 transfercase. I am still debating whether to stay with column shift or move it to the floor.

I also plan to upgrade to 1-ton axles and as much tire as I can fit with my 2 inch suspension lift and a 1 inch body lift.

I should probably state that I am not a hardcore wheeler. I like to offroad some and have to drive it to where I will wheel. That may sometimes mean towing a trailer full of ATVs.

Well, that is the thumbnail sketch of my plans. As always I am open to comments and suggestions.

How are your body mounts?

Best to have them in A+ condition once you start ripping apart & rebuilding the body. ;)

Are you referring to the metal area on the body/frame or the insulators? Either way, they look okay. But I have not inspected them closely. I will have to remove the front insulators to replace the front cab supports.

Yep, the body mounts.

Core support through position #5.

#1 and #2 determine your door opening alignment.

Well, position #1 is removed along with the front clip. All other mounts are in-place and tight. I have installed braces between the upper hinge attach-points and the front bed support. It is stiffer now than when the torsion boxes were installed.

I assumed I would need to align everything before I weld in the new rocker panels and torsion assembly. But, I am hoping that the braces keep it close.

Right floor progress

I have the right floor brace removed. Notice I had to lift the cab some to get at the bottom welds. Also, the new B-pillar patch panels arrived along with all of the floor patches.

Were the torsion boxes already gone or did you pull em?

What are the plans to replace them?

Stock or custom fab work?

I removed them to get to the braces and outer floor section for replacement. But, given their design and propensity for holding mud and such, I plan to replace them with rectangular tubing structures. That way I can wash the mud out and hopefully prevent a repeat of the rust I encountered.

Of course, I will need to ensure the rocker panels are well sealed and coated inside and out to prevent rust as well.

Hi all I'm new to the list and I am looking at a similar build to yours Boondocks. My rocker boxes are long gone to rust though. I don't see any recent posts on this thread, please tell me you didn't stop the project. Mine is a 72 K5.

Welcome to the CK5! :waytogo:

Any welcome to the 1st Gen Forum.... arguably the most dedicated group of K5 owners on the site. :waytogo: :waytogo:

We've got a special set of problems most K5 owners don't have to deal with....our trucks are now more than 40 years old, the parts are harder to find and more expensive, and there's more rust hiding in these trucks than later model ones. :yikes:

It's no surprise that the build threads you'll find in this forum are long-winded multi-year projects. Getting these trucks back to factory-fresh condition takes a huge commitment. If you see a thread that hasn't been updated in a while [cough, cough...Might As Well thread...cough] it's usually because of work, family or other issues. If you're patient, and keep watching you can be sure that those "good build threads" will eventually percolate back to the top of the list with fresh progress and pics.

:deal:
