okay ive been brainstorming on making my own doubler and was talking to a toyota friend of mine and he told me trail gear has a transmission doubler kit so i was thinking how badass would it be to have a dual sm465 it would be super long but in theory no harder to do that a 203 205 doubler. any opinions

Several have done it, the last I remember was a guy on Pirate in the Chevy section. I believe the second trans input is the week point.

Really weak. Look at the torque multiplication the 465 is capable of. Really hard to get the 2nd trans input to hold up to the torque.

Not sure how weak it is, I never researched it just ran across it.

As for a 32 spline 465; '85+ 4wd transmissions have a long 32 spline tailshaft. Also, Off Road Design offers a short 32 spline shaft to replace an OE 10 spline unit (~$350).

okay well im reading a thread about it on pirate and some people put the 465 behind an automatic successfully but god that would be so long..

What about a short little trans behind the main one. A T90 would never take the torque but they are only like 9" long.

well i think i would be able to avoid the torque issue if i just never put it in 1st 1st gear who need 344 to 1 anyways? (344 is what i believe they said it would come to over on pirate) anyways there is a guy over there that said be had some one piece adapters for this application made and i am trying to get a hold of him. but if i really do this i will never put it in 1st 1st low that would be insane crawling though!

Regardless, the input on ANY transmission is meant to handle the torque the motor produces.

When you put a reduction box in front of it (in this case, another 465), even in second gear you are putting 3.48 times more torque into the input shaft of the trans.

The input shaft on a 465 is MUCH smaller than the input shaft on just about any transfer case, particularly any of the 32 spline stuff used in conventional doublers. Hence, the stock input will break quite easily. Every person I've heard of that tried it has broken the input into the second trans.

I do remember reading something along the lines that the 465 that were in medium duty trucks (buses, that kind of stuff) had a bigger input shaft. The few people on pirate seem to have opted for custom input stuff, and then you're really getting into way more cost and complexity than this setup is worth IMO.

i dont know that having a female imut made would be all that expensive i mean youve got the ord doubler which im going to say is 7 or 800. or you could go this route mabey get a good machinist to make you something for im betting alot cheaper than that i mean theres a great possibility that im wrong but its fun to think of the the cool stuff you can do

i found i guy on pirate thats running 49's with 4.11's and he made a pretty sweet coupler and with that setup he has broken shafts and even the pinion on a 14 bolt so at this point im very convinced it will hold up to my 40's with 4.56's ill do a thread on it when i start. the way its done even turns the input into 35 spline so it should hold up.

Try it and let us know how it works. :waytogo:

Personally I think the desire for lower gearing gets taken too far. I wouldn't do it, but I have nothing against somebody trying something new and different (as long as they don't take out a school bus when their junk comes apart :D )

I'm boring - I'll stick to the *mostly* tried and true stuff. I hardly have the time and $$$ to do that, much less the time and $$$ to try crazy new stuff that may not work.

oh i really dont care about the lower gearing ill prolly just putt around in 1st and 3rd and low the one any only reason i want to do it is because i would feel sick to my stomach if i put out 800 to get a doubler for the t cases when i could have made something with more options for wayyyyy cheaper but i will for sure let you know what happens im no idiot if i feel its super unsafe and stupid i WILL NOT run it but if it turns out to be good ill run it and recommend it. here just so yall can read up on something new that you may not know about if you dont like pirate ill give you the link of it
heres the link to just the trannys

and heres spidrs full build if you go towards the end theres a video of him doing somewhat of a wheelie with this setup if that dont show strength i really dont know what does
