hey, is the insulation under the hood really needed? i have a 6'' k&n air filter with the xtreme flow top. but i had to take the xtreme top off and put the origional top back on because it was starting to suck down insulation into a section of the xtreme top. i dont see being able to afford a body lift and new body mounts this summer... so i was wondering about taking out the insulation or cutting out a section of it and holding the rest up so it doesnt fall down. then i'd be able to put the xtreme top back on

thanks,
matt

your not going to damage anything mechanical, that's for sure. Your hood will be alot hotter, and will most likely steam when it is raining. If you live somewhere where it snows, it'll steam in the winter too. Also, it can lead to fading of your paint and/or cracking.

My insulation was falling down, and just plain nasty looking. So I just took it off. I noticed once I pulled it off. The engine compartment is more dusty looking. When I get some more $$$ I'm gonna get a new one.

What is insulation ????? j/k I didn't have any on mine and the steam is right but WTF doesn't effect it IMO...mike

It could help for fire supression too. The clips are plastic which melts allowing the insulation to drop and smother a fire.

Last time I checked, mine burned quite nicely, the plastic things were the only thing left.... Are these things supposed to be fire proof?
thanks,
Mike

LOL, there goes that theory/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Neither of my trucks have them and the hood doesn't get any hotter than when my truck sits in the sun all day.

Neither of my trucks EVER had that insulation.

Yes you had me on that one ...But kind of fun making rebel flags on the hood in the snow (where the cross braces are and arnn't)...LOL...mike

owned three old trucks....my 85 still has original paint and the place it is least oxidized etc is on the hood but it has insulation my 82 and 84 dont have it but dont compare either because although the 82 had original paint it was abused....the 84 I keep waxed and never have seen excesive wear b/c of not having insulation.

My '79 did not ever have hood insulation as far as I could tell. I swapped on a hood from a '74 and it did have it, but It was about crappy. I tore it out. I am perfectly happy without it. You could always put some high heat/ composite material above the Xtreme lid to keep it off of it.

I took mine out about 10 moths ago because it was falling apart. My hood does not get any hoter, and does not steam. Just my input. Later 80K20

My old 76 still has it's. I really should yank it out, it's oilie ang greasy, a fire waiting to start.

Loose it. Just a big water/mud sponge.

Should not make any differance to the paint on the hood.

thanks everyone for all the input... i'll probably just rip it out, i wanna put that xtreme top back on and dont think it should be that big a deal without the insulation either...

i'll probably take it out this weekend, i'm trying to get my truck back today. just had the driverside rocker panel cut out and mount under the driverside door rewelded

thanks,
matt
