Interesting article about old GM diesel trucks still in use

my buddy has a 63 c-10 stepside that was factory diesel installed.

sadly the motor is long gone as it died a long time ago . but the truck still runs with a hopped up 350 and the 3 on the tree still.

he grandfather purchased it new in texas I guess it was.

Any idea what the engine was?

We have a large radio telescope array near here. It is part of SETI, which searches for intelligent life (or the radio signals from them). I have a friend who ran the place. Very low budget and small staffed. Funding a mix of private, University's, and the Air Force. Pretty cool place! Very picky about electronics near the array. No older diesels though.

My guess is they are plugged into block heaters. Just like gen sets. Back up power gen sets have block heaters plugged in all day, every day. They are constantly kept near operating temp, so the engines can fire up, and run the generators almost instantaneously.

I would like to see under the hood of those Suburbans as well.

Where is this place at? Some one on here has to be near there.
