I was going back and forth between building a car hauler I wanted vs a dump truck that I needed. Then the dump body came up for cheap so I went that route and it will be very useful. I also had a 49 Chevy built on a crewcab chassis fall in my lap with the start to a car hauler, so I don't regret the choice either.

Today I started test fitting the bed. I will need to shorten the frame, build the front cylinder crossmember, mount the new pivot crossmember, and get a new hydraulic system installed still. Wouldn't hurt to get the truck running and fix the brakes either.

I took a trip to grab new mud flaps today. Also was able to look at a truck that uses this hinge assembly to confirm how it needs to be notched into the frame. That gave me more ideas when I saw the light mounts integrated into the rear of the frame and bought those panels as well.

Tonight, I cut a couple feet off the back of the frame and notched it to fit the pivot assembly. I am mounting the pivot 3/4" proud of the frame to account for the doubler plate and rivet heads. I will need to make spacer plates to run the length of the frame that have clearance holes for the rivet heads.

So are those pivot pins on the hinge boxes removable or do the tabs get welded on once installed?

The new pivot pins are removable. One 9/16" bolt will hold them in. I'm in the middle of cutting off the old pivots. One down and one more to go tomorrow.

Finished taking the old pivots off. First test fit the new pivot was still about 5/8" too high. A little more trimming of the frame and it sits nearly perfect on the frame rails now. Next step will be to finish getting it centered on the truck before I weld things in place.

I finished welding out the rear hinges to the frame and bed. I'm doing well with horizontal and vertical welds but still struggling with overhead. But I think it will hold up for the rest of my life.

Greased up the pivots as well. All that is left is fabricating the crossmember for the cylinder, installing hydraulics, installing the PTO, installing the hydraulic reservoir, and getting the truck running and driving...

I picked up a K30 cab chassis over the weekend with a PTO pump and large reservoir.

Interesting fuel tanks on that one.

Watch lifting the dump bed with the lift like that . The truck needs to roll or if you lift to far it will possible kick out a arm/pad from the box . . . Ask me how i know

I'm aware... just wanted to check that everything pivoted freely without binding but only went up a couple inches. When I move to working on the center crossmember, I will either Tilt the cab forward or pull the pivot pins again to lift with all 4 arms.

Interesting fuel tanks on that one.
Passenger side is a standard 20 gallon tank but the recall from the 80s added a cage where it wasn't covered by a body panel.

Driver side is a nice aftermarket task for a bigger truck.
