I feel bad that I kind of just barged in here and started posting and never introduced myself. I'm John and I purchased Mike's (schuttothrill) CUCV. It's my first trail rig and it seems to be well built. We will see at Tuttle in another three weeks.
I enjoy the fab side of things, the mechanical I'm OK, electrical I hate. Winters are my shop time. After daylight savings hits I'll log 40 hours a week in the shop. I try to build something each winter. A couple of unrelated fab projects are below.
Winter project 1
Built this 4WD articulating loader the next winter from plans again. Still use it all the time.
Always wanted to build a sand rail. Built this Badland Buggy Sabertooth from plans the next year. KZ750 powered. Drove it 15 minutes and parked it, never to drive it again. No where to really drive it around here. Sold it last winter. You can see the little loader in the background.
Did a DIY 5.0 swap in a Mazda Miata. Built 306, T5, 8.8 IRS rear. Made everything myself - subframes, trans mounts, etc.
In the process of converting a 1968 SAAB 96 from a V4 FWD car to turbocharged 4 RWD car. Car is gutted and has a four point bar for road racing. All fab is done, just doing bodywork now. Here it is just back from sandblast and paint before starting bodywork.
Fenders had to be widened 4" per side so they were sectioned every 2", bent back into shape to maintain body lines, welded, then started filler. Fronts were sectioned, repositioned out 3", welded and in the process of filling. Here's where it sits today. Summers suck for sanding so I haven't touched it in three months. Will finish bodywork over this winter. I have had the entire drivetrain bolted in and everything fits so it's paint, bolt in and drop in the wiring harness from the donor car.
