New but Old

Hello just thought i would say it again i have not posted but once and now i am starting a project (87 Jimmy), I have a lot of work on this one but it is rust free,oh the benefits of living in AZ. I'm going to be asking some questions and advice mainly for what direction to go on the build. i sold my 86 short wide it was a good truck but i wanted a Blazer/JimmyOld truck 1.jpg
This is the new projectJimmy project.jpg

I bought it with what i was told was a 350 4 bolt main. but it was not! then after a month of driving it the transmission (700R4) failed. I'm good though i sold my 86 for $3500 and bought the Jimmy for $1200 with the extra money i purchased a 350 4 bolt to build up (after running the numbers), and goodies for the motor included new carb (670 truck avenger) distributor, plugs, wires etc. also found a 91 GMC all chrome grille, love the look of that year of jimmy. and some other misc things like stereo equipment. After the trans let go i pushed it into the garage a year ago and then work picked up so i let it sit until a couple of weeks ago, The gentleman i bought the jimmy from ( i guess from guilt) gave me a an 454/400 out of an 1985 motor home and said he would sell me a set of axles(1 tons out of a suburban) the front axle is a dana 44 though, but they are 4:10s posi rear matching and until i can find a Dana 60 it would work. These are hard to come by here in this part of AZ lot of rock crawler projects. The jimmy originally came with fuel Injection but previous owner junked it and stuck a carb on it:dunno:. I toiled on the idea of replacing it but he hacked up the wring pretty good. what it comes down to is that i would of bought the jimmy with no motor because i have had plans of building one and the body was very straight. the sides had some factory decals that were sun faded and peeling and the top was hammered from the AZ sun so i started removing all the decals and fixing the top also plan to replace and recover the interior (seats, dash, carpet, and headliner). Going to be working on it this winter when i have time. My biggest decision is what motor and trans combo, probably going to stick the big block in right now. and if i can get the time i will post a build tread, might be to slow for some or most. I do enjoy the forum and have learned a lot and seen a lot of good work on here Thanks.

Hello

My name is Michael Ward. I had a 90 K5 when I was about 20 and I have missed that thing so bad ever since I sold it. Haven't found one as clean yet. Anyways, I have been wheeling a TJ on tons for a couple years and have decided it's time to build a 4 linked full size so I'm joining this forum for access to research, and for ideas. Thanks!:D

Hello everyone, new member here from the Los Angeles area. I have been looking for a nice k5 for the last few months, and I found this beauty (term used loosely) last week and I couldn't be happier. She was named Bertha by he PO because she's "big, white, and ugly" and the name has stuck. She's a '83 originally with a 305, but someone somewhere sometime dropped a 350 crate motor in, original (recently rebuilt) sm465, np205, stock gears, 6" lift (all springs) and 35" BFG muds. The body is straight and rust free, paint is very tired, and the interior need some serious love. She leaks a little oil from the passenger side valve cover and needed the clutch adjusted and a new fan/alt belt as it shredded on my way home, but is a solid beast of a truck. The stock gears make the granny gear almost useful from a dead stop. I failed to get a picture when I brought it home, but after peeling off about 30 stickers and grinding the cheap white house paint off the mirrors, here is a picture of my new toy:

I look forward to spending lots of time here and learning all that I can, while making this truck a little better every day

That would have had an NP208 in it from the factory, not an NP205. Is that smog legal with a 350?

Yes.
In CA you can go bigger on engine size never smaller.
And it has to have been offered in the category.
So you can't put an engine that was only offered in a 1 ton like the duramax in a blazer.

Hello all! I knew about CK5 back in the day when I was around 16 or so. 14 years later here I am. I originally built a 1987 K5 when I was 15 or so. Took around 2 years but had it on the road and painted for first day of school senior year of high school. Replaced both bedsides doors fenders floor pans rockers trans engine....pretty much it all. 350 Ram Jet crate motor was dropped in there too. Every dime I made went into it. Then I sold it 5 years later for a fraction of the price. Life has its way of throwing curves at you. So now I just picked up 1972 K5 CST. Rockers, Lower lips on fenders and quarters, a little problem with the hood latch area, but not terrible. I have plans to do a frame off with this 72. New motor and trans as well. Lots to come! Look forward to sharing with you all.

Wow, thanks for the warm welcome!

My mistake, np208. Since you know so much you should know that you can legally swap in a larger engine with all the smog control equipment. It just passed last week with flying colors.

Well I was referring to the fact that I was giving my introduction, and it was obviously my 1st post on this forum. I am new to k5 ownership but I know my way around cars and have been on plenty of forums. Usually when you introduce yourself you get a welcome, not somebody pointing out how you're wrong about what's on your vehicle.

That being said, I am sure with your post count that you have extensive knowledge to share as I'm sure many others on here do as well, and I look forward to learning from all of you and that is why I am here.

...and the truck passed the extensive visual and sniffer tests of the California smog nazis last week before I took possession of it

I just assumed you had an NP205, and I was telling you it wasn't original to the truck, guess I didn't think that was offensive, sorry if you took it so.

The emissions testing is not something I have to worry about where I am, so I was curious.

Greg,

Thanks!! I have been checking out the "might as well" page! Obviously I am a few years behind but I was checking out the first body phase. I knew what I was getting into so its extremely motivating to me! If all goes well I will be moving it to its dedicated workshop tomorrow! It will be garage kept for the first time in 42 years! Thanks for the tips and motivation!

Hello, I am Tyler Cook and i am the owner of a 1988 k5, for the most part it is stock. 350 motor, 700r4, 208 transfer case, 10 bolts with original gears in them both. it has a 4 inch lift with 33x12.50x15 tires. I plan on completely redoing the entire interior this winter and that will include building a custom fiberglass dashboard and instrument cluster bezzle. i also will build new panels in the rear. i also plan on putting in 4.11 gears in the diffs with lockers in them both. i dont plan on wheeling her a lot or anything, maybe a muddy back road or some snow when we get it, other than that i just plan on building a truck that when someone walks by they say, "wow, thats a awesome truck."

Howdy! My name is Cooper and I am the proud owner of a 1990 GMC Jimmy, affectionately referred to as, "my bitchin' K5" most of the time. I've had it for about 5 months now and it is more or less stock. I have it for the same reason that I'm sure 90% of you have your Blazers - I rode around in one with the top taken off as a pretty young kid and swore up and down that I'd get one some day. It took me until I was 26 years old but I finally did it. I lucked out and got one in pretty good shape inside and out, but as with any 25 year old vehicle, there is a lot of work to do.

I spent many years looking for the perfect one before I finally pulled the trigger and made a purchase. During all those years I also spent a lot of time lurking here at the CK5 forums and the community here played a large part in my decision to get one. I plan on being buried in this truck, so I'll be on these boards for many years to come.
