Introductions & Greetings

Found this forum researching dropping an 8.1 into an old Military Jeep I'm turning into a hauler. Kind of a rare bird. Found a great thread by Larry that will help out tons. GM Auto Worker for 33 years now so I feel right at home already. Thanks for a great forum and welcoming me into the group!

New Guy

Hello all, new to the boards. I live in Oklahoma and work as a rough neck. Which is why I bought a 1990 Suburban V1500. I was in San Diego, California for 14 years and my primary mode of transportation was my 06 Harley Dyna. In so-cal you can ride all year round, but I got a job in Oklahoma working on a oil rig so the Dyna wasn't gonna work. Bought the burb about a year ago right before I left for $1500 and she been a good ride so far. She had just shy of 200k on her when I got her, I know how to wrench and how to read a service manual so not too hard. But lately its been thing that you wont find in a manual. So sought out on the old Google bar and low and behold the most common site that popped up was here, and here i am. hope to get some good knowledge and give some from "Ow, OK that didn't work" situations.

im mikey b im in the army stationed in ft bragg the place i was born. i have a 91 chevy suburban v1500 rebuilt 350 tbi and rebuilding the 4l60e right now for the 4th time. its my dd so im plaining on doing a 4in lift wit 33s i still use it to my baby promod camaro 5 sec car and my 73 chevy vaga v8(drag car 2)
HOW DO U POST PICS

Northern IL new guy.

Hello everyone, my Name is Dick and I finally made back to square bodies. I'm not one to drive new vehicles and I had a few in my early 20s and after messing with hunks of junks over the years I decided to go back to Chevy because they are easier to fix and they are great trucks.
I picked up a 83 k5 for a steal at 600 bucks. Around here even not running trucks can fetch a grand. The PO was not very experienced mechanically and the fuel pump broke and he decided tonturm it into a "mud truck" so he ripped all the interior out .
Soooooo I bought it and threw the pump on and away she go's. Just need to tend to all the smaller problems now, new fluids, bulbs, bolting then seats in....etc.
No pics right now but I'll habe some for sure today. Body is decent for IL and its age. Has some floor rust by the drivers side like usual and rockers but she go's straight down the road.

K30 crew cab dually 6" or 8" pic please

New to the site..I've been researching pics and forums to decide whether to go 6" or 8" on my 1989 k30 crew cab dually. Please your thoughts and pics and greatly appreciated. Thanks again

Bought my dream truck....help!!!

New to the site but I'm sure I won't be a stranger! I just bought the truck of my dreams...a 1972 blazer, completely restored! Restored but still needs a fair amount of work. So I'm a woman, living in Boulder and trying to fulfill one of my dreams. Half of that is completed, I bought the truck - even had the top off yesterday in the middle of December! The other half of my dream is to learn how to fix things on an older vehicle. This is where all of you come in...and I really need the help! I just got the truck back from the mechanic, it needed a bunch of electrical work done, small fire in the steering column!!! Anyway, he also did "some things" to the timing??? I don't know, sometimes I feel mechanics don't bother telling me the whole story cause I'm a woman oh and a blonde!

So here's my question, the truck starts beautifully first thing in the morning even when it's cold, 20 degrees this week! But, then all day as I'm driving it around...going to work, shopping, etc. it's a struggle to get it to start. It cranks and I pump the gas but it takes a while sometimes. Once I get it started its fine but if I park for more than 30 min, it's doesn't start well.

Thoughts? Even if I could get some advice so I sounded a little intelligent when I take it in, that would be good. Could it have been anything with the timing that he tweaked? Be gentle on me,try not to laugh, I'm trying here! Thanks everyone!

Welcome to CK5! (all of you!)

This thread is just for saying hello and providing background about yourself. For technical answers, post your questions up in the Garage. Use a thread title that describes the problem, and folks will show up with answers. :)

To post pictures, you must either have a minimum number of posts (it's either 5 or 15, I don't remember) or you must be a paid member. Personally, I think it's worth it to get a paid membership, as many of the pictures (including some manual pages) on this site cannot be seen otherwise. Also a couple of the forums.

For Mbanola, the thread title might be something like "hot starting issue on '72 K5." Include as many details as might be relevant. For your issue, you haven't identified what engine your truck has, nor what type of fuel system it uses. You likely have some form of carbureted 350, but folks swap stuff out all the time. Also repost your story so folks know what level of details to provide (if they overestimate your knowledge they may skip over details that are not obvious to someone just starting out). If you do enough typing & reading you can become a master mechanic on that truck. Most any problem you can encounter on it has already happened to someone on here. And if you want to plan ahead and get an idea of what failure points are common on these vehicles, read through some build threads by folks who have similar vehicles. Then when something happens, you'll be able to say "oh yeah, so-and-so dealt with that last year. Let's see how he fixed it." :waytogo:

For Zsublett, there is a sticky thread in the Garage with pictures of lift/tire combinations. It's not specific to crew cabs, but it will give you an idea of what things look like. It's called " How will my K5/truck look with xx" tires on xx" of lift?". 1/2 hr of paging through that will likely give you the answers you need. If not, post the question in the Garage and you should get input from those interested in such things.

For PORTnPOLISH83, sounds like a good story! You can start a build thread in the Garage (or the Driveway) and get folks' input and admiration. Nice to see another midwestern guy!

For airborneleadtheway, thank you for your service! Ditto about the build thread.

Hi everybody.

My name is Ben and I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains, I quit my carrier as a Chevy tech in 2012. I am now a commercial plumber, and dad of 4. I love my 6 GM trucks, but my 90' Suburban is going to bring my family wherever we want to go.

New from MI

Hello, my name is Vegte. I am a Jeeper, but bought my 1st Blazer to be a plow/ offroad toy recently. So far this 86 has been like a wife with the love-hate relationship. I love the looks of the truck, enjoy driving it, and I love the Chevy simplicity, but I hate the "mind of its own" and the bad gas mileage. Hopefully I will keep "Brutus".

87 k5 Happy holidays!

Welcome to CK5, stop in and say hello, this is a great place to make your first post and tell us a little about yourself/truck. :D
Hey guys, Im Sonny, Good day to you all!, I just inherited my 96 year old uncles 87 k5. ( he bought it new )
It has a couple of rust spots from sitting outside the last few years But starts rigbt up. 56k on the dash, overall the truck is in pretty good condition. Interiors pretty good except for the headliner which was sagging so i took it out. I just ordered a dashtop headliner and a Pioneer MVHX560BT Digital Media Receiver. No cd player but i have no need to play those anyhow.
I painted all the pillar pieces, carpet and kick panels with Dupliciolor. Didnt come out too bad. That can of goof off lets me not worry about over spray. Its a god send. Those velour door inserts just soak up paint no matter how many coats i put on, it seems to not be enough. I may just order some black vinyl inserts.
Next up iare some black/gray coverking seat covers. Im running 33's w/ no lift. Eventually im debadging and going all black exterior. I n any event i just wanted to say howdy and i think this forum is great. Ive been checking it out for a bit and you guys seem to be a very knowledgeable bunch. Im sure i'll be searching the forums for many more tips !!

I'm a new guy from eagle mountain Utah, having owned a 71, 72 and a 75 blazer I decided I wanted something different. Gmail hasn't offered a newer blazer in while and I thought after getting a 2000 silverado 4x4 rcsb, 5.3 , auto, standard tcase. I decided to throw on some 07-13 3" bulge 4" rise fenders bedsides and he hood. I got a 93 12 valve getting rebuilt with a 14mm head pump , still unsure of tranny. I'm doing a sas with 05 + super duty axles with coils and a 2 inch body lift and trying have no more than 4" of lift with 37" tires. So it will be a prerunner style crawler trail rig with bedsides bolted to cab and full top and back of cab removed with a rear seat installed . Build a cage and have a nicely done soft top made. Here's where I'm at now.

Obviously I still need a grille and lights. Funny how much different the lights are set than the previous years .

The way these bedsides are attached.

Here's a photoshop I did a while back , similar to this with doors and sitting a lot lower.

Todd here,

I'm new to the community. I appreciate all of the great info you provide. I'm working on my 1972 Blazer with my son. Teaching him how to turn a wrench. :waytogo:

Happy Holidays!

Newbie

My name is chris. I am a newbie to CK5, as well as Blazers as a whole. I got my k5 in a straight up trade for a 79 c10. She is in pretty great shape for a 91. I look forward to learning more about the Blazers. I am in San Antonio and live on Lackland AFB.
