Hi all Newbie here.Figured I jump right in :).I'm looking at a 1988 4wd single cab dually, more recent 454 t400 60 frt/70 back with not many options. The under side is pretty darn clean as is the cab forward. The bed has rust and a little rot.Everything works on it and it seems well maintained.about 160K on trk w/25 (receits)on 454 W/ throttle body+tranny.Guy wants $2500.00 firm What do you think Worth It ??? also owner says it has 3:83's which he says was ordered w/ those gears. How rare are 3:83's in the 1 ton 4wd duallys. Thanks for any help and have a good one

Never seen 3.54's in a GM. Those are Dodge gears commonly. 3.73's are possible, 4.10's are most common.

any pic's?

Rene

Damn I had a brain freaze on my 1st post I meant to say 3:83"s sorry I fixed 1st post

Would have 3.73s not 3.83s, but close enough. I don't think they that rare, I've had a couple sets of them. If it's solid, runs good, then doesnt' sound like a bad deal....

Thanks for the reply b454,what gears where available 4:56 4:10 and 3:73 ??? The guy selling said his father a GM dealer parts mgr ordered it with 3:83's Do u think thats poissible or think the guy is off his rocker.I have 4;10 in the trk I own now and the dually that I'm talking about here and thinking of buying definatley seems higher geared when I drove it.Thanks

As all have said so far, he may swear it has a 3.83 gears in it but it doesn't, they do not exist, 3.73's wouldn't be unusual I guess. I think the most common in a dually was 4.10's

I don't believe I've ever heard of a 3.83:1 ratio in any GM vehicle. 3.73 and 4.10 were very commonly used ratios.

Back to your original question. I don't think $2,500.00 is a bad price at all if everything works okay.

I confess to being a lousy negotiator. I guess if it seems like a reasonable price, I pay it. If it doesn't I walk away. I hate haggling.

Have you looked at the engine up close? The reason I ask is that I think many one tons, with a 454, were carbureted and not throttle body injected in 1988.

If it was originally a carbureted engine, and a TBI was swapped-in, I would spend some time verifying that it was done correctly. You can decode the VIN on various internet sites and that will tell you what engine it came with.

Also, inside the glove box there is a long list of three character codes. Those will tell you exactly what options the truck came with, and how it was configured. Again, you can find some websites that have that information.

I do remember reading that in 1987 1 tons equipped with 454s could be had with either carbs or throttlebodies.

Id buy that truck in a heartbeat!

ME too !! SOunds like a great deal. I see lesser trucks that are in worse shape go for more than 2500.

You might want to rethink the negotiation tactic. At 6000#, 454 ci and gas at $4 a gallon, I'll bet you're the only guy looking at it.

Any pics?

I paid $4350 for my K30, single wheel crew cab, Silverado, and an aftermarket utility body. No rust.

I'd try and work him some, even at 2500 bucks, gas is at an all time high with projections of $6 this fall. The value on these vehicles will likely fall for recreational use.

Yea I know what u mean.I know gas is bad,but I've always wanted that application ie....dually,1ton,4wd,reg cab.The owner and I been "dancin" for about 5 days now.I offered 2300,but it's only been up for sale 12 days and he says he want's to give it more time. It's a tuff call for me I really want the trk, because up here in NE there aren't that many left, but I don't want to give in,because with $ times we have now.Every $100 bucks counts.I don't think a lot of people will buy a older gas monster like it :) ,but any minute a buyer could show and I"M OUT
I haven't figured out how to post pics yet.

Two hundred bucks is two hundred bucks, but what's your time worth? You've found a truck you like that's close by.

I can't tell you the number of times I've gone on wild goose chases looking at someone's vehicle described as "excellent" when it's junk. So many sellers embellish their descriptions; I guess in hopes that they find somebody who is blind or stupid or both.

How are you going to feel if someone else buys it and you can't find another? Or, those that you do find are rust buckets and you have go 1,000 miles to get one that doesn't have rust. Or, it takes you two months and you've looked at a dozen that aren't as nice as this one. All of a sudden that $200.00 seems like a bargain.

I am confused. Isn't the '88 single cab one ton the "new" body style? I thought that the only "old" body style one tons after '86-'87 were crew cabs. If I am remembering right, how could it have a D60 front end? Weren't the "new" body style trucks all IFS?
