I think their main function was to dampen kickback so you wont get your wrists tweaked at the wheel,and take stress off steering components..not so much to cure or prevent death wobble..
I've had stabilizers that clamped to the long tie rod with u-bolts and an angle iron bracket,that type would solve the tapered stud woes...would be possible to make such a bracket to fit the tapered stud type mount too..
