is it always a good idea to adjust sector shaft after swap?

I got a 2wd sector shaft today with the cover on it at the junk yard (for only $7). I bolted it up to my 4wd box. Do I need to adjust the center nut on the cover properly?

I'm going to use the GM service manual to check mine out, so that is what I would suggest. I know you do not want to bind them at all, and maybe an experienced steering box mechanic can adjust by feel, but that's not me. Good luck. And why different gears in your axles?

I'm working on that. I got the 14-bolt first... then the Dana 60. So I have to get 4.56's in the rear to match them up.

I've installed the steering box with the new sector shaft. I didn't do any adjusting on the center nut. Everything seems like its working great.

If you moved the shaft "with the aluminum cap still attached" from one box to another I wouldn't touch it.

gm tech told me.

loosen nut.

tighten bolt till just snug.

back off 1/4 turn.

tighten nut back up.

seen a brand new box from gm installed by dealer out 1-1/2 turns. guy said the wheel was all over the place. but truck drove o.k.

took the play out like i just stated all good. why dealer couldnt do it is your quess.
