Is limited slip ok to use in front 10B or spare parts?

Hey brothers, I have the D44 3/4 ton stuff and the older style Warn premos for my front 10B (along with the SRW 14BFF and disc conversion... been in my ex-gf's garage for a year now) and I bought 8 lug rims about 2 months ago and was waiting on 37" tires. My ex-gf bought the 37" Iroks bias last Monday, which caught me by surprise though.. Don't really know how to thank her without being in bed with her though :D
So I guess I'm very close to swapping the stuff soon. All I need is the 10B/14B conversion u-joint, 14B u-bolts and D44 hub oil seals. I checked the D44 bearings and they're still good, just needs cleaning and repacking.
Well back to the title on point, I know I'll have trouble selling the rear 10B once it comes out but will it be alright if I kept the carrier, side bearings and the Auburn limited slip for the front 10B? I'm not sure how the limited slip will behave in the front...Kinda thinking of saving money than go for a Lockright. Or should I use that as a spare? I know I will eventually go Lockright for the 10B and Detroit for the 14B when I have money but it will be a while.

Sorry for the long story, I haven't been talking to CK5 about what's up with my build for a while so it's just moving along very very slow....

Thanks in advance, brothers

It will work sometimes , and sometimes it won't . Limited slip means the slip is limited , it does still slip .

With an actual locker , lunchbox or otherwise , you at least know right away that its working , and you don't need a buch gas pedal . If it won't climb something , you back up and try another line , or winch out .

i'd rather have a limited slip in the front than open, i guess. but imo, avoiding wheelspin on obstacles is a key to keeping a 10bolt alive. it's not the spin so much as the grab once it actually gets traction. really hard on axle shafts and stuff.

btw, it sounds like your ex is even cooler than mine. the only rubbers she buys for me are a lot less puncture resistant and are no good in the mud. i'm prett glad they don't have steel belts, though :eek1:.

I ran a limited slip in the front of my 10bolt with 42tsls. Its still alive. Just remember if its coming out of a rear it may be 30spline. Then you'll have to hunt the elusive 30spline front axle shafts.

Both of my axles are 30 spline... The title was more of a question of if I should drop in the LS or not... I was thinking more of using the limited slip as a spare part, that is if, I run a Lockright and it breaks. But again, you have a point with those 42s.

If you run a Lockright and it breaks , we stick your spiders gears in and go home :p::wink1:

limited slip

I am currently running a limited slip in my front 10B and IMHO it is absolutely worthless in extreme situations. Other than this one occasion the limited slip has gotten me where I needed to be when I wanted it to. I got hung up on a large rock my full locked rear end was doing its job but the lowest front tired that needed to be working wasn't even trying to turn. Three wheels turning just wasn't getting the job done. My plans are to put a Lockright in before BB-07.

This is the situation Fred is talking about in the video below.

The LSD wasn't even helping out, you can see it try, but there is no try only do or do not. And it didn't!

IMO an LSD probably only really helps in mud and snow. I've seen Fred's LSD working like a champ in deep snow.

Pauly has a good point about the easy trail repair with a Lock Right failure. :waytogo:

alright thanks guys! I really appreciate the input, You just saved me from wasted space by not keeping the LSD....I'll go ahead and sell the 10B axle as a whole, I even had the brakes replaced, brake cylinders, drums and all. It's gonna be tough knowing no one will go for a 10b but I'll try.

I'll be driving with open diffs for a while, I'd love to get lockers and go to BB07 but it's too early to see what I can make happen.

Looks like I'll be at Blazer Bash with open axles too. It's still plenty of fun.

Lockers are over-rated! :haha:

What about in sand??
Thats all that I have around here...besides the occasional 15' x 2 ' mud pit.
Because I have D44 an 12B,Its a cross of not being able to afford it and not being able to justify getting better axles. But I would like a little bit better traction....So a locker in back and LSD in front.

Sorry for the hijack :wink1:

It would probably help in sand, too.

However IMO, a lunchbox locker would be cheaper. I say this because I believe all LSD's replace the entire carrier. So you'd have to set-up the gears to install the LSD. Where as the lunchbox locker doesn't require the gear set-up to change.

I could be wrong about that because I'm not as familiar with the different LSD options.
