i am curious since never have had the 89 crew dual's rear diff off. would the only option gm would have for something that spun both sets of wheels be the gov-bom? i know it spins all 4 rear wheels when ya romp on it.... or was there another option that the truck may have?

also looked at the rpo codes on glovebox and no G80.... but i know it has spun all 4 rear wheels together... and not a feature of an open diff...

Are you sure the PO did not install something. I could have a limited slip like an eaton or something.

Ira

no bro. I remember in 90 when dad bought her new from a dealership ;) and he never put anything in it.

that's why I am  if it were open diff only 2 of 4 wheels would spin.. :dunno:

I do not know if the gov-loc is a limited slip. I think it is a locker. There are several limited slips that were available but I could be wrong as I do not know if they were offered in trucks or Blazers.

ahhhh!!!! :D i thought a gov-loc was a lim slip :haha: so it probably is a lim slip since a gov-bom is a locker?

hehehe true but that would require $$ and stuff :D it does need to be done anyway... prolly never been opened. so oil def needs a change.

just gear oil and a tube of permatex. No need to buy a gasket, just use the tube of oil resistant permatex I believe the super blue works really well.

The easiest thing to do instead of quessing it to pull the cover and see what it looks like maybe post some pics.

a gov loc is a half assed attempt to create a quiet locker, it is a cross between a posi/LSDand a locker, if a differance in axle speed is detected , it locks, but through clutch packs, as to eliminate(or reduce) traditional locker chatter

have some silicone :D prolly black... or red lol most likely high temp... i dunno. know i have some that i used on two other rears when i changed the oil not too long ago.... may even have some 80/90w somewhere.. knew i bought a bunch but since my garage isnt built it could be anywhere lol

I know what a gov-loc is the problem is his acts like a LSD but does not have an RPO code for it and he watched his pops buy it and knows nothing has been put in it.

I am gonna bet it is a limited slip now after thinking about it. it would make sense to have one in a crew dually w/ 454 and 4.10's made for working... :waytogo: time will tell though :D

did not see in the first post that this was a 14 bolt. It could be an eaton LSD. I have seen eatons gov-locs and detriots. You would know if you had a Detroit.

Ira

The military got detroits in theirs, is the rear a dana70 or 14bff? If it's a dana70 then maybe a powr-loc? I know I can spin both tires w/ my dana60 w/ powr-loc.

i think it is supposed to be a D70. I was told only the cab and chassis came with the 14ff for the duallys... :dunno: I will have to investigate.

gm put power loc in from the factory in an 89 crew dually?

also this wasn't a cab and chassis it has a bed on it that was bought that way.
