Is there such a thing as a fast shifting truck manual transmission? Or how about one with some closer ratios than the SM465?

Add a some short shift linkage... it basically shortens the throw to something more reasonable

Search NP435 Short shift or gear banger. Don't see why it couldn't work on a 465

The ZF S6-650 is the only real alternative to the "traditional" (465/4500) truck trans that is designed to handle truck use, as a "GM" product. At least that I am aware of.

Don't have time to consider the gear spread, and no idea how well it shifts, but I suspect it shifts noticeably easier and smoother than the 465, just based on how much newer the design is.

didn't advanced adapters sell a adapter for a munci to a 205 or something? My gramps had some GM version of a NP883 behind his 82 6.2 k10, it was always broken.

Advance sells a fair number of adapters.

As far as I'm concerned, there aren't any car manual transmissions out there that will reliably handle the stresses a full size truck will inflict on them, not to mention fitment (shifter placement), and issues with mating them up to a t-case in 4WD apps.

Idk. I broke 4 ring gears in my 12 bolt yet never broke my super T-10 with the "warrenty" case in my camaro. It was running low 11s then in a 3800lb car with a 4500 rpm clutch dump.

Some of the use of the heavy duty truck trans is likely simply because they were designed to fit trucks, and they were designed for t-case mounting, as opposed to the car units that had to consider ground and floor pan clearance. Not to mention the low first gear of the truck trans, at least the 465/4500.

I have a feeling however, that the 5000+ lb weight of most of the vehicles that used these transmissions, was a factor. It certainly wouldn't be due to power output, because none of them at the time were putting out massive amounts, nothing I'd expect to scatter even the puniest transmission GM had in use at the time.

The lighter duty transmissions installed in the trucks were pretty uncommon AFAIK throughout the production run, you'd have to look at what they were put up against, and in which trucks, to see if the engine output or vehicle weight was a consideration.

Whats the NV4500 like?

Its not gonna be a muncie or a T56, but it cant be that bad, and probably the best option for a truck.

Ive driven a ZF 5speed which is basically fords NV4500. It still drives like a truck. Not like an SM465 with the huge shifts and "clunk" when you get into gear but its still slow shifting.

As far as "short throw" shifters for the sm465 that doesnt exist. Cutting the stick doesnt make the trans shift any different or any shorter, you just cut the stick, thats it...

You should look into what Im gonna do if I ever build a KOH style racer in the far future.

Muscle car vintage muncie M22 rock crusher with a divorced 205. That trans is PLENTY strong to handle any added abuse from a truck.

88-up that still ran sm465 had aluminum top and position was moved back few inch's . also read this version was shorter throw shifter.

otherwise big huge heavy trucks dont realy need race car style trannys if you ask me. but the option for close or wide ratio back in the day would have been sweet to have had.

I liked the Nv3500 gear spacing in my truck. It was wore out when I got it and I swapped for an NV4500. The NV3500 seemed closer together than the Nv4500

Get a full manual TH400 and a ratchet shifter for the floor. If you want you could leave the clutch pedal in the truck and push it everytime you bump a gear just for old times sake.

:haha::haha: good advice. I once had a 4spd truck I swapped an auto in and left the clutch pedal. Goin down a curvy road I would start bouncing the clutch pedal off the floor "ahhhh no brakes" Got many passengers to turn ghost white.

I say if your wanting to use a race car transmission build a race car. I think my sm465 shifts just fine in my truck and if you want better get a nv4500, then you have overdrive. I dont see the point in fast short throw shifting in a truck.

However, my brother-in-law has a 76 2wd with a m22 and thats a fun truck to drive. But worthless as a work truck, doesnt have the gearing to pull a load.

The short throw "gear banger" option doesn't replace the shifter with a shorter stick, it effectively reduces the amount of throw required to run thru the gears by the mechanical advantage of re-locating the pivot distance onto a new shift lever.

Search "np435 short shifter" on pirate for some good examples and pics on how much less the throw becomes....

Maybe not the best option, but you could effectively make one for short money.

Not sure what the OP was trying to accomplish.

I'm looking to take better advantage of the power I'm putting down and the wide ratio SM465 with the 4ft throw isn't exactly ideal. Maybe I'm just used to driving short throw sports cars :dunno: From what I've heard the NV4500 has the same gear spacing as the 465 but with overdrive. The NV3500 has tighter spacing and would work, but I'm not sure it'd hold up to the power/weight.

oh hahaha :flipoff7:

Everybody is hatin on the idea. He wants to go faster..... Long throws = wasted time spent shifting where he could have it in next gear and accelerating quicker. He doesnt exactly have a work truck if you read his thread. I say go auto converted to manual. I like the gearing in the 700r4, you get off the line right meow.... and they CAN be built strong.
