Is there such a thing?

I looked up the NP435 short shifter and it won't work with the muncie based SM465.

Did gm ever use a 435? All of my fords built for wheelin always had 435s, and they shifted really quick for an old truck 4 gear.

My camaro has a clutch pedal and a braked th400. If I was wanting a tough tranny to bang shift I would be looking up the word Jerico.

I don't think they ever used it because GM had the SM465.

Talk about some serious transmissions!! :eek1::eek1: But starting at $5k I can't justify that.

The problem with any manual in a truck isn't really the transmission, it is the length of the shifter. It has to be much taller to be in easy reach, and this of course pushes the top of the shifter much farther from the pivot point at the trans. Even a modern 6 speed in a truck has a long throw from gear to gear, although they shift much smoother than any old 465. I think you are enjoying that SS way too much, and wanting a truck to perform and shift like that is not likely to be an easy thing to do with a manual.

It might be possible to use an NV5600 with a shorter shifter to help shorten the throw, but it isn't going to be as easy to reach. But, you could also shorten the shifter on the 465 to do the same thing, although it isn't going to make the gear changes any easier.

I think this truck is still used as a truck though, and a hotrod at times.

Then the answer is there is no transmission that is middle of the road. Its either granny first, low second and a huge jump to third like an sm465 or nv4500 OR a shallow first and then a tight gear ratio like an M20/21/22

The short throw "gear banger" option doesn't replace the shifter with a shorter stick, it effectively reduces the amount of throw required to run thru the gears by the mechanical advantage of re-locating the pivot distance onto a new shift lever.

Search "np435 short shifter" on pirate for some good examples and pics on how much less the throw becomes....

Maybe not the best option, but you could effectively make one for short money.

Not sure what the OP was trying to accomplish.

Idk how the 435 works but you cant change the pivot point of an sm465. Thats why there is no short throw shifter for them. Cutting the stick doesnt make the throw of the shift shorter it makers the throw of the shifter shorter. And by doing so you sacrifice your ability to properly reach the shifter, unless you move the drivetrain up and make a new tunnel getting the trans closer to you.

In order to achieve what a shorter throw really means the fulcrum point of the shifter needs to be moved closer to fork/pivot ball side of the shifter. It cant be done on an sm465 because its all built into the case. Its not like a t5 where the pivot is built into the shifter body that bolts to the trans.

Have you ever driven an older car with a muncie 4 speed in it with a stock shifter vs a hurst short throw? It takes ridiculously more force to get the car in gear from moving the pivot point. I couldnt imagine making it harder to get an sm465 in gear.
