So this is the engine that came with my c10. It’s not the original to the truck. Typical ran when taken apart..it’s been in the previous owners garage on a stand, covered for 15+ years at least

Anyway, how can I tell if this engine is still good and worth putting back together? As you can see it needs some work. Intake, timing cover, freeze plugs, distributor.

Once that is figured, I can start a asking how freeze plugs are installed and which intake I should get. I figure edelbrock dual plane like I have on the K5

Two plugs, one from either side. Again, I can only assume these are the plugs used when he began to take it apart.

Does it turn over? Needs a new timing chain, and probably doesn’t have hardened valve seats

I have never done an engine rebuild or much of anything in regards to building an engine. Plug changes, oil changes are about it.

Yes it turns over and you can hear the air building and escaping. So I assume it still has decent compression.

heco in mexico should = harden seats .

this far down i would just pop the heads and be done with it . check it all over and go from there . head gaskets are cheep .

dont due another silent chain type setup . there all streched out in 5k ish miles .

Missed that part. Was just going off the year. My bad

The heads are to clean not to have been apart and cleaned. even the little bit of of water jacket I can see looks clean. I bet the plugs are old ones used to plug the holes, also I bet there was oil in cylinders for storage. Push rods, rockers studs nuts are clean too. Self centering rockers too. I bet the work has been done. Doesn't look like valves are adjusted. I see a little port work too

From what the previous owner told me and I have no reason to believe he was lying. Everything is good, just needs the intake put back on and freeze plugs, also the timing chain cover pit back on.
He even has all the compression reading in his notebook.

What are the compression readings?
Its easy to do, if you want to test again to compare.

When did GM start casting heads in Mexico? I would have thought everything coming up from there was long after leaded gas was gone.

Put the engine on a stand take the oil pan off
an look at the cylinder walls. Also look inside the oil pan itself see if there's major sludge build up, replace the oil pump. if the cylinder walls look good an no "major" sludge build up, reassemble and stab that bad boy in.

Sounds good..

Seems you have a good engine there
just do some research ask questions an like mentioned above YouTube is your friend

Old Target Master stock replacement engine. Some of them were cast to be able to be installed in both passenger and drivers side dipstick applications. That one has newer heads with self aligning rockers.
