Yeah, but so did some later SM465's...

I also do not see the output extention housing in that guys pic. That's where 5th gear lives. You can see it in my pic, the aluminum housing part at the rear of the tranny.

The 93-95 Nv4500 has the Bottle neck shifter but looks the same as the 96 and up which will have the 4 bolt square top shifter.

I think it's a 465 from a late 80s 2500. I asked him what year, and then how many lugs, but when he said from an 89-90, knew already that it was a 465. Sucks cause he wanted $250 for it, probly get for $200 maybe less.

I looked there too, can't tell by the pics either, but the length of the shifter snout leads me to believe its a sm465.

Guys says it's a 4 speed with OD from a mid 90s Chevy.....

There's a 5th gear available for the SM465? That would be really awesome as I want OD for my Jimmy, but a 4500 is pricey.

:ears:

I wish it was that easy!

Here is a shot of my NV4500 during assembly. It shows the damper and the 5th gear assembly quite nicely. In order for this to work on a SM 465 the whole shifter assembly would need a re-design, plus a custom main and countershaft, plus, etc etc...

I was thinking of an add-on, much like an overdrive/gear splitter unit or something like that.

Well, you're right on target in one regard...the basic premise of the NV4500 was adding a 5th gear to the back of a SM 465. It's obviously more complex a task when you get down to the details, but that is basically what they did.

As for adding an OD the options I looked at were these:

NV4500...roughly $1200 to source, add $400 for bell. 0.73 OD

Ranger overdrive...roughly $2000? 0.73 OD, ability to split gears. Adds 6" to drivetrain length, makes a doubler impractical.

Gear Vendors OD...not sure on cost, but $2K wouldn't suprise me. Adds to rear of T-case or Tranny. Can't be used in 4WD.
