Is this a good deal ?

I'll just throw this out there to stoke the fire. I was planning on a new 383 (and still am, but not right now) for my blazer and after finding the insane prices on island I figured I'd get a new motor too. I ended up finding a guy on ebay out of Portland, CHS machine who was going to build me a 383 with the cam of my choice, new aluminum heads etc etc with a 7 year/70k mile warranty for $3,000! Shipping was even cheap for me (relatively speaking). My neighbors complained about me working on the truck all the time so I'm waiting till we move now, but it's a smokin deal:eek1:

383

340 Horsepower 435 Ft. Lbs Torque

HT 383E High Performance replacment for 1996-1999 Light Trucks 350R engines
An emissions-legal small block that brings on the torque for your '96-'99 GM truck/SUV!

The HT383E crate engine from GM Performance parts is an exciting new extension of our “High Torque” line that is especially designed for '96-'99 full-sized GM pickup trucks and SUVs that is a direct replacement for your high-mileage 5.7 liter stock engine.

The HT383E offers you the same brute strength of our HT383: forged steel crank, 4-bolt main cast iron block, and a camshaft designed for towing and hard work. With 383 cubic inches, you also get a broad torque band that peaks at 435 lb,-ft, at 4000 rpm with 340 horsepower at 4500 rpm.

Our GM Performance Parts engineers designed the HT383E so that installation is as easy as possible. Simply, swap your new HT383E in place of your existing 5.7 liter engine using your stock intake manifold, wiring harness, and fuel injection system. The stock computer adapts to the new HT383E, and you suddenly have stump-pulling, big-inch small block at your disposal.

Engine Kit Includes:

14" automatic flexplate, balancer, water pump, spark plugs, spark plug wires, oil filter, oil filter adapter gaskets, intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets, complete vortec distributor, A/C Delco spark plug wire set.

I know what's going on my wish list :thumb: :haha:

If I were to ever swap engines, I'd find a used 6.0 or 5.3 and dump it in...

If I was gonna go through that kind of hassle I would swap in a diesel . At least then you could afford to drive it when you were done

$4100 installed sounds good, from a shop, with a warranty, but the vortec engines are super easy to change. Granted you need space and tools.

I put a new engine in my 98 burban for waaaaay less, even tho I did the labor was able to save some $$. Like thousands less than your $4100

Crate engines save time, but if you build one you could save $$. After all its still a SB chevy.

Personaly, if I were to build one now for that price I would prob build a 396 small block.

CK5'ers forget that not everyone lives in house with a garage or a big shop, or has multiple vehicles to drive if one is down. Or has connections with machine shops ,or even have the ability our knowledge to do a rebuild them selves.

I really would like to see some one who's not a machinist totally rebuild a Vortec small black for less then $1500-2000.00 AND have it removed from the truck, rebuilt, and reinstalled in less then a week. If you can do all that then sure a crate motor is probably not a bargain for you. but for most people it is.

Sounds like he wants a stock replacement engine for his daily driver.

Like I said above I still build all my own engines, but now its more because i like doing it then saving money LOL!

I agree,

4 down this year and will have at least 10 more together by summer.
Gonna be a busy engine year.
Sure does help when you have a machinst you can trust.

Yeah I have to find a new Machinist up here, I had a really good one in NM slow but very meticulous

well thank all of yo who answered my question ! it looks like the deal for me @ 4K so in 4 weeks my baby goes in the shop and the install begins. I would've loved 340 hp/430 ft-lbs tq but in the real world I'll be driving it everyday and 4wheelin 3-4 times a year ( if I'm lucky ) so go mild and get regular gas mileage ( it sucks growing up ). but pics will come soon after

Wel here goes, I'm outta town for a few weeks and a buddy of mines says he cando it for $1500 less than the shop and give me bout 350 hp ! So with that said it's at his shop right now and I cant wait to get home and take her for a spin. So with the $$$ I've saved, I'm having the front end rebuilt, fuel pump and filter replaced and thinking about putting in alarger fuel tank xD HAPPY HOLIDAYS ! ! !

rebuild update

Well here goes, it's finished ! it took 6 weeks instead of 3, went through 2 fuel pumps before realizing the sending unit needed to be replaced, however after all is said and done it spins like a top ! So my next project is the tranny ! which leads to my next question; what is a good price for a rebuild ( its an auto tranny for an 88' k2500 with the 401 diffs. ) ? would a shift kit be useful for this vehicle ? so again guys let er rip !

If you got connections you can get em built pretty fairly. ima have a guy I know rebuild mine thats been rebuilding transmissions FOREVER. Hes only charging $150-$200 in labor :D Just gotta throw parts on top of that. But thats a pretty good deal i think.

I got mine rebuilt about three years ago for $850. Thats through a guy my dad does work for. So probably if you're in the 1000-1300 range I would say is fair. THeres some mods that can be done to the tranny to make it work better for you too. Look it up on here through the search
