I identified the ring and pinion as a richmond 4.56
but i'm still trying to figure out if its a posi.
Is this picture enough to tell. How can i tell?

This is the 12 bolt out of my 72 blazer.

Looks to be an open carrier. Take a pic of the ring gear side of the carrier. Also how did you tell what gear manufacturer? Is it marked Richmond on the gear somewhere? What are the teeth count of both gears.

Like this?

As far as the gears, yes they were well marked on the ring gear so it was easy to id it.

Get a much better angle pic so that i can see the ring gear bolts and the carrier near the cap.

Well if it has Richmond gears and 4.56 at that then someone has already been into that rear end since GM never put a 4.56 gear into a 12 bolt in a blazer.

Open...

Was prolly a Gov-Bomb from the factory, although usually they called it a locking rear diff on the options sheet. The orginal carrier prolly got fragged in either case.

Yep, and definately an open carrier. Looks like a thick ring gear also. That means your carrier is for 3.07-3.42 ratio.

meaning it could be the original rear end but someone change the entire carrier and gears? And there is no ifs, ands, or buts, it has 4.56 gears in it.

And the final anlysis is its not a posi, correct?

And there is no if's, and's or but's it has 4.56 gears in it. that i know for sure.

That is correct. If you find the BOM number on the axle tube then someone can tell you what the application of that axle originally was. The BOM number is usually found on the passenger side axle tube on the top side just inboard of the spring perch.

In case you don't know, BOM stands for (Bill Of Materials)

It could be a swapped in 12 bolt, or a carrier and gear replacement...definitely not stock ratio and definitely not a posi, Gov-bomb or otherwise.

Couldn't have been a Govbomb, they didn't come out till the late 70s....Probly Eaton or Auburn style posi...

you know an easy way to test if its a posi or not is to put one tire on pavement and another on the grass and power brake it. both tires spin then its a posi. If you rotate the ring gear around to see the other side you can tell if its a posi or not. If it has a little latch with a spring on it that can swing into the spider gears then its a posi.

i'm not sure what you all are telling me here.
I dont really care if its an original or not cause i've already converted to a 14bolt. I just want to sell this one and its kinda hard when i cant tell people what i have. I can say for sure it has spring perch distance for the 72 and older, it has 4.56 gears, but what kinda of carrier is it for sure.
Can i shoot more picture? find more numbers? what do i do from here?
