Went wheelin today. I got stuck side ways between two ruts. When i went to reverse out i just heard a loud grinding sound, same thing when i tried to go foward. Shifts into park, rev, neu, over D, 3, 2, and 1, it just does not go anywhere and makes a grinding noise. So i got home and pulled the pan, and this is what i found. Is it bad? What does it look like to you?

eww, looks like metal sitting in the bottom of a pan that should only be holding fluid. Doesn't look good but I'm no trans dood.

Yeah, im not either but i think its toast.

I'm not a transmission guy, but I'd say that looks like a tiny amount of wear which is probably normal. Now that big square thing ... no idea, but that doesn't look good.

You gotta remember, those gears are pretty big in an automatic transmission. I'd say you more likely broke a shifter mechanism or something small, not something big.

But again, what do I know? When my old Blazer had transmission problems I just sold it!

time for a bowtie overdrives or monstor trans or a guy you realy trust local .

and i would not reuse that case . to much trash threw it if you ask me.

and do not forget to flush the heck out of the cooler lines and cooler to keep any trash from getting in to the fresh one you will be installing.

Just got off the phone with a local builder. 525.00 for a rebuilt 700r4 with Kevlar clutch bands, HD planet gears, HD sun shell, 13 vain pump, and corvette servo. Sound like a good deal?
He confirmed my trans was shot.

That's not a bad deal at all.

He is a local builder that alot of the mud drag racers get there transmissions from. And his transmissions come with a 3 year warranty, with on hidden exceptions, as in you blew it up muddin. He will repair, or replace for free.

That's a great deal. I paid $900 for a built 700R4 locally and not nearly the warranty you are getting.

read up / ask lots of guys and be sure you trust a local at that price.

the few local tranny shops in my area SUCK big time. i wouldnt even let them do a oil change on a lawn mower let alone reman a auto tranny.

not saying thay are all bad but do your homework first .

5.25 wont even realy cover master reman kit and reman or new convtor let alone labor to do it. somthing fishy here by just the price

I have already done alot of asking around. I get the same story, he is just an older man, who is retired, and does this for the hell of it. Right now i know of 6 trucks running his transmissions. Im going to the mud bogg later to meet up with some freinds and i will ask around out there.

Last guy I had do a 700R4 for me, said the master kit cost him just under 100 bux and it took him about a half an hour to 45 min. to go through the whole thing. He let me watch him rebuild it. Granted he is very good and transmissions is all he does. This had to be around 8 years ago.

I wonder if when they say friction, like low/reverse friction, they mean clutch?.

Well a little update. I found a newly rebuilt 700r4 with 241 transfer case, wich is what i have, from a 89 K1500 for only 350. I asked the guy if he had any paperwork on the rebuild, and he said he did not. He did tell me however, that in the bill of sale he will write out, IF the transmission does not work he will refund all my money+100 bucks for the inconvenience. He said he pulled the trans/tc and motor to install a V6/5spd. So what i plan to do is sell off the 241 TC and buy a rebuild kit and some other HD parts and learn how to rebuild my old one myself. I have always wanted to learn how to rebuild a Auto transmission, and this is a great opportunity to do so. Its a skill that will save me hundreds of dollars. :waytogo:

I cal bull****.
There is no way, even if you know the tranny like th eback of your hand, you need about 2 hours min, for taking appart and cleaning, and then another 2 for putting it together.
As for rebuild kits, yeah $100-150 for basic kit.

Are you a master automotive transmission specialist? Do you really know everything about everything? You sure seem to think you do sometimes.

There are very good, very fast mechanics around. I watched with my own eyes. One guy in the Allison dept. Where I used to work at the Detroit dealer. Bring his personal '96ish 1/2ton Chevy. In the shop after work at 5pm. I was on the afternoon shift till 9pm. He pulled the tranny out of the truck, overhauled it, reinstalled it, and drove home when we closed at 9pm.

Sorry Issam my buddy that does transmissions had my 700 torn down to its bare guts in about 15 minutes. He does transmissions every day. To clean just throw em in the fancy heated parts washer, another 5 minutes.

Shoot I can tear down a Th 350 in about 30 minutes have it sparkling clean in another 30.

For that price I would skip the so called rebuilt trans and get one I know to be solid, sounds like he is using good parts, probably already has some of the parts from other transmissions he has taken apart.

It would take me forever to put a 700 back together but a guy who knows them inside and out can do it very quickly.

I would 100% go with the rebuilt transmission from that older gentlemen. The older guys that have been in automotive can be amazing. Especially if this one in particular has mud racing experience?
The 700r4 can be made pretty strong too, with the HD planetarys and definately an HD 'sunshell' as its a common failure point, and kevlar clutches. Its a good price too. I paid $280 for a mud caked 700 at a junkyard that only had a 30 day guarentee. (install it withing 30 days and if it doesn't drive, bring it back)

I'm easily pull out 6 bills for the old timer's well built tranny. DO IT! haha
