Is this bumper guard worth getting?

This chevy is getting parted out at a local junkyard (FYI- Yuma AZ). Does this "bumper guard" really provide any protection value when offroading? If there's any value in strapping it on my stock 88 k5 bumper I'll see how cheap I can get it for. Looking for feedback.

thanks

I've got one of those.... they are nice, and they bolt fairly solidly to both the frame and the front bumper. they will only protect the center of the truck though. if you want to keep the stock bumper, they are about the best protection you can get.

mine has light tabs and tow hooks though.

Those come in several varieties ranging from cheap chromed dress up ones with thin tubing and 1/8" sides,to ones made by Smittybuilt and other good name brands that were very rugged...

I had one of unknown origin on my 75 K5 (it was 2WD!) and it was a rugged one,the tubes were thick as schedule 40 pipe and it had 3/8 flat stock for the sides..it weighed enough to sag the front end down a good inch when I installed it..it had light tabs and hooks on the sides too...

The crome guard in the photo looks cheap. One way to tell is if the tubes are not welded. If just bolted then cheap. Also some mount to the frame.

That looks like way too nice of a truck to be in a junk yard.

unfortunately it doesn't look like that anymore. I didn't ask about the history, but by the time I got there it was stripped pretty good. I got the push bar for $40. It's a sturdy welded one. I'll sand it and paint it. It'll be a nice addition to my k5.

Yeah, being from MI and moving out here, it's amazing to see all these older vehicles with no rust. My k5 I just got is ugly and faded but no rust. Everything else can be replaced!

Agreed!..but I say that almost every time I go in a junkyard here too...:doah:

It must be nice to be in AZ,where all you need to keep a vehicle "forever" is to replace engines and drive train parts, and interiors, and the original body & frame never rots away...you could keep your "first car" until death do you part out there probably..

My dad bought the K5 I have now in 1982. It spent a few years in Iowa, but not much salt time. Now it's back in AZ, safe from rust. :D Funny thing is my CUCV came from Ohio and is a rust bucket, and it continues to rust even here. It's like once the rust gets past a certain point, there's no containing it.

Back to the original topic: How much do you figure that bumper guard weighs?
