Noticed this putting my axles back in today (14bsf), is this the hated gov-lock? Sure doesn't look like a standard diff. Anything I need to add to the Amsoil refilling the diff?

Cool, thax. I don't plan on running huge tires or doing hardcore wheeling with this rig so it's probably just what I need. Just out of curiosity, are the gov locks from a 10b rear compatible with a 10b front?

Yes, other than direction of rotation possibly? They are the same diff though.

Hmm, now would the direction of rotation be fixed when a proper frontend R&P was put on the carrier? Could bits be swapped to work with my 30-spline front axles? Getting way into the theoretical now :doah:

What's that laying in the bottom?

Crud. :) Looks like a magnet for picking up metal shavings, which it seems to have done quite well judging by the amount stuck to it:whistle:

That reminds me, I didn't get a chance to get the gear oil stirred & warmed up before I drained it, would it be a bad idea to spray the diff guts down with carb cleaner & scrap the grunge off the bottom of the housing before I refill it?

Go for it with the brake cleaner, i have done it many times. I usually flush everything with some gear oil afterwards.

I am not sure which way the gov-lok would turn if put in the front even with the proper r&p. I think they are direction sensitive but could be wrong. I do recall mine locking up in reverse aswell as forward so it may not matter. You should be able to buy a 30 spline gov-lok. Then no messing with parts. I know many racers upgrade the car rear to 30 spline stuff from trucks.

I dont think welding a 10 bolt is a good idea, it would not last long. Or did you mean the 14bsf?

Bust out the welder and two spools of Mig wire...:weld:

Heh, er no. 1st, my welds still suck & I'm stuck with flux till this spool is done; 2nd this is a street/snow/light wheeling rig, don't want a couple of diff spools, and 3rd I'm already planning that for the Zuki :weld::grind::hack::saweet:

The front and rear differential gears turn in the same direction. So it won't matter to the gov lock if it's in the front or the rear.

Cool beans. Wonder if anyone has run one in the front and how long it lasted?

Probably a little longer than one in the rear.

They are great traction units for trucks with stock tires, bigger tires are detrimental to them in several ways (i.e. more leverage, heavier tire, higher RPM before engagement = boom!)

Its a limited locker. In between, gives the locking characteristics but with less of the harshness found with true lockers, at the price of strength.
