just looked up the block numbers for what was sold to me as a 396 but it turns out to be a 454!!! :cool1: anyone have info on blocks w/ #3999289? everywhere i looked on the net said it was a 454 any other way to make sure?

measure the bore lol, if its 4.25 its a 454, if its barely over 4(I dont remember the exact #), its a 396.

yeh I got the same thing on a casting number search, but, if his casting #s are anything like mine, they are next to illegible. Also, says it is either a 2 or 4 bolt main, pull off the pan, see whatcha got man...

i'll pick it up in a week or two, its still at the guys house. hes our diesel mechanic, he said it has a steel crank and shorty headers. he was going to put it in his firebird but the firebird already had a beefy motor, so he wants to get it out of the way. when i pick it up ill leave it in the shop so we can go over the whole thing. i cant wait :D

extenally balanced...

A 454 will have a "half moon" cutout on the harmonic balancer, and a weight on the flywheel(if you are getting it complete)--the other big blocks use a regular flywheel and non-counterweighted balancer..be sure you put the right one on if its a 454,or it will shake itself off the mounts...
Good score if you got a 454 instad of a 396!! :waytogo:
