jacks for lifted trucks

In the driveway, a good floor jack under the axle, chocks under the other wheels. Jacking to the frame or bumper just flat doesn't work, IMO.

On the roadside, bottle jack under the axle on scrap lumber, chocks under the other wheels.

Yep. Suspension work sucks as it's a multi-stage deal. You get your workout hefting the truck, that's for sure.

Jack the truck under the axle, put big honkin stands under frame, remove tires, lower truck to stands. Then you can balance axle on the jack (although we never ever get under something that's only held up by a jack, right? :whistle:) or use smaller stands for the axle.

Prolly best to use the floor jack on one side to fiddle the springs up and down and have a smaller stand on the other side. I find that having both the 12-ton big-guns and like a 3- or 6-ton set is invaluable.

Another option is to set the axle down on moving dollies (the square wood ones) then you can roll it out of the way!
 
Yep those work well also I just went with the moving dollies because they were cheaper!
 
My first guess is that they're trying to win a Darwin Award.
But could you explain what a farm "suicide" jack is for us non-farm people. :confused:

Farm jacks, aka Hi-Lifts are nicknamed widow makers and suicide jacks cause they can kill you one of two ways. They slip out under alot, slip sideways but also if the teeth slip the jack handled will whip up and down rapidly, slamming the users dozens of times with the handle. In alot of countries they are declared unsafe and many recalled.

My question is why are so many still using them and whats a better alternative for getting high enough to get out of a pinch when offroading?
 
So many are still using them mainly because there is no alternative and they are the best at what they are used for IF they are used correctly.
 
I've never had a problem with my highlift. I'm just careful with it.
 
I made four things of cribbing and have used it many times messing with my suspension. IMO you need at least six jack stand to do stuff. Normally, as has been said, jack high under the axle, get jack stands under the frame, then lower the axle. I feel much safer with four stands, two between the wheels and two either front or back, depending where the work is happening. When my springs were FUBAR, I used an engine hoist on the frame to get the stands under.

we are in grass also, I went and got steel plates for the jack stands(to keep the jack stands from sinking)...
