It's bout time to find the wifey a new set of wheels and she's liking
the new Grand Cherokee with the Diesel. Any of you got one??
I'm needing some feed back on that engine combo if you got any.
And on the 8 speed auto trans.

My "aunt in law" got a v6 model with the 8 speed auto.

You don't notice it shift that much unless you pay attention, that's a lot of gears. She likes it, and it rides well. She does notice that it really picks the right gear for the job quickly; compared to her 2000 Grand Cherokee with the 4 speed auto.

So far, she has not had any *transmission* issues. Electrical on the other hand... I guess the radio makes some thumping noise when listening to AM, and there was some grounding issue which would cause the dash to go dark randomly. There was a recall for that problem literally a week after she got it! I believe they did fix the ground issue, but so far can't fix the radio :(

I heard today on the radio Chrysler is planning to bring back a "full sized" Jeep with the "Grand Wagoneer" title next year...they didn't say what they were going to offer for a drivetrain,or if a diesel would be among the engine choices..

Electrical issues on a JGC? Is this 2004?

Plus, an 8 speed tranny is probably gonna be crazy expensive to rebuild when the time comes.

Yes, but thats a lot of miles down the road.

Does Jeep have teh 100k powertrain warranty now?

AM radio still exists? :haha:

Haha, yeah... for Christmas we got her a USB stick and have started to put music on that instead. She is amazed at how this "new technology" works!

I'm sure that AM radio is not exactly high on anyone's priority to fix. Heck the dealer is probably saying something similar!

My thoughts exactly. 8 gears ?... I guess the old saying about
"barking 2nd" is gone. I'd like to see the ratio of each gear. I bet they're so close you cant feel anything. Bout like a Polaris.

After riding around in one, I can tell you it's hard to feel when it shifts because of so many gears. Similar to a Polaris for sure. But, seems to feel pretty solid; although she (my aunt in law) doesn't drive it hard at all.

I will tell you though that even with the electrical gremlins, she absolutely loves the vehicle!

I'm more interested though in this new "Grand Wagoneer"? I kind of dig the Commander styling, but I had a Wagoneer before my Suburban so I am kind of partial...

I know the 6, 7, 8 speed transmissions go against what we are used to, but they rock.

Always the right gear for the job, way better gas mileage, keeps the motor in its powerband...

Auto's have come a long way. No reason to be afraid of the good ones.

You mean there ARE some good ones?....from what I've seen ,they have stopped making "good" ones since the overdrives came along...
I know I'll get flamed for saying this, but I feel the old TH400,TH350,and C6 and Torque-Flight 727s are probably the longest lasting automatics ,and most of the newer ones fail a lot easier and at lower mileage than the old 3 speeds...

I think the 8 speeds do sound cool though, there is no such thing as too many gears--but more of them means more complication and potential troubles I'd think..

I agree Robert that those old three speeds were some husky transmissions for their time, but I also remember working on quite a few of them at or below the 100K mile threshold. We see so many automatics today that are computer controlled coming in at 200K and more miles, many have never even been serviced! The computer controls torque to the trans during shifts, traction control and other variables to help the newer transmissions last longer than ever, even though they are built lighter and of lesser materials. It is an entirely new game for sure, especially factoring in the depth and complexity of electronic interface.

The thing I would be worried about if you can get into the thing. The last JGC I tried to get into the back seat was like geting into the back of a two seat sports car.:eek1: No room thru the door and not much when you got in. And I am not that big. But maybe they have changed the new ones.

Won't ever get flamed from me....I'll agree with you 100%.

All started going downhill with the "lockup" transmissions... heck,,if you look at a 700R4 crooked, it will fail..

I have a T-475 (straight cut gear T-400 ) that has been in 3 trucks so far....
The damn transmission has outlasted the trucks.... :haha:

Not true. The allison 1000 is a great trans that lasts under harsh duty and always knows what gear to be in.

:haha:

Th350 better than the new autos! That's a knee slapper! I bet for every th350 that actually lasted 100k miles in a truck, 10 6 speed autos have lasted 200k miles. They are extremely tough and reliable. Not to mention the other benefits of the better mileage and a perfect gear for every situation.

that 8 speed is a well proven and reliable trans. very simple inside too. only takes 1 special tool and a press to rebuild.

I have seen aw4's with 350k+ on them
545rfe's with 250+

ive never seen a th350 last that long

edit- my brothers 700r4 in a burb went 189k before it blew up. would have lasted longer but he had the fluid flushed. it made it about 10 miles after that
