Not the best forum for this kinda of recommendation, but my wife is interested in a project jeep. She not at all interested in a k5 and I got nothing against her having something different. I could use some advice on which types might be good candidates for her or which ones to stay away from. Ideal candidates would be pre-75 to avoid smog hassles or something inexpensive to modify from the late 80s. Her only requirement is being able to drive topless like me so a removeable top is required.

Any other websites to get good knowledge from?

If you're looking for a topless jeep, you'll have to get a cj or a wrangler (from your description, an early cj would fit the bill). The old wagoneers are awesome trucks (my dad's had a few- put on a 4" lift and some decent springs and tires and they're great off road), but they don't have removable tops, so... The old cj's are also pretty good off road, and there are a ton of parts available for them. Much easier than finding parts for even a K5. Plus, some came with V-8s, so you can fit in any AMC V-8 with no problems, and a swap to a chevy 350 isn't too hard either. Lots of guys do that, so I'm sure all the parts you'd need would be easily found. Just search for a jeep forum on google- I'm sure you'll find something.

Flatty...

I'm kinda partial to the high hood CJ-3B. A little less run of the mill...

Not that they are easy to find, at least in these parts, but for coolness factor and a removable top a Commando would be awesome . IIRC there was one on the Ultimate adventure this year, driven by a girl in fact. Check out this link http://www.jeep-commando.com/, a friend of my sister used to have one and they are pretty cool. Bigger then a CJ, similar in size to an early bronc. :D

I would go with a early cj-8 (scrambler) for the added wheelbase. Throw on some longer springs, xj or waggoner's are pretty popular. Then throw some 3/4 tons, there are plenty of full width swap kits out there. Then to tuck the tires back in run some h1's or h2's

I Vote YJ. I know it doesn't fit your smog/emissions requirements but I was partial to the 94 YJ that I owned. Thing could smoke the tires with a 4 banger. (granted it was geared 4.88 and 35's)

Be prepared to be stunned by the resale value on these.

That said, I like the fact that Jeeps are super common, even the older ones. I'm starting to want one after wheeling with my buddy and his Jeep. Parts were far easier to get than my Suzuki's and it fit down trails that my full sizes could never do.
(Not to mention if I kill it I'm not killing an old Chevy.)

Been digging through craigslist a bit and found a few candidates. Looked around on pbb and most of those are all built and out of my budget. I kinda like that cj8 and the high hood. I'll have to see how serious she is about wanting an older project vs something more "done".

Thanks!

this is true, all the jeeps are priced so high. its hard to fine one cheap. what about a old bronco or something. i know its a ford but the tops were removable. does she want a jeep or is she open to other things?

does she want a jeep or is she open to other things?

She specifically wants a jeep cause her uncle had one back in high school and she has fond memories of goofing around in it and wanting one for herself back then.

Prices seem similar to other 4x4s in that they start expensive for new ones and get cheaper until about 88. Then as they get older, the prices starts going back up. I've found an 89, 91, and 01 wrangler all for under $3k obo. Id still like to find a pre 75, but don't see any yet. I could at least swap a tbi sbc in one of those and not worry about smog.

Forget Jeeps. Get her this...

This is what she REALLY needs.... Can Anyone say Duece?

Just for a random factoid the Deuces don't get horrible mileage. The guys over on SteelSoldiers have reported 12mpg or so out of their bob'd Deuces. Doing what they did there shaves a good ton+ off.

Jeepster Commando: Wheel base similar to a Cherokee (2 dr waggy) and removable top!
