Jesse's truck problem thread

i was just thinking..i have a 5" block and a 1" add a leaf in the rear for my lift..i have a set of springs from the axles i bought (k20) and im thinking, can't i build an all spring lift instead of the block? how would that work out? is it worth it? would it be better or worse on the road?

you could if you took that k20 spring and used a shackle flip or the homemade style. lots of options to get six inches. you could get the flip and a longer shackle or use that add a leaf.

probably the best option would be use your add a leaf and the shackle flip with a zero rate to move the axle back. up to you if you want the k20 spring or not. im not sure if that will net any lift over your origional spring.

another random question

strengthwise

how much weaker is a semi float 14 bolt compared to a ff? i mean if i got new shafts would it even be weaker? i know of the easy removal with the ff, but besides that and the larger ring gear i dont see too concerned..thoughts?

the main drawback is the semi floating-ness of it. if you somehow happen to break a shaft then youre ****ed, stranded and your wheel fell off. but with a full float you can drive yourself home and get off the trail.

the strenght upgrade from a 10b is huge but it is still SF. are you referring to better shafts in your 10b or the 14? the 14 bolts are still very strong axles and theyre just waay bigger than the 10b. with upgraded shafts in the 10b you might be up in the 39.5 range? and youre still an 8.5 with smaller bearings and everything. spend the 200 bucks on something better IMO.
if your gonna do it just do it! im running 37s on my rig and have yet to need the 14 thank god! i dont think i do anything more hardcore than you do.

its mostly road and then the mud whenever i can find a passenger (i only have my permit) but i have a d44 in front, should i upgrade, bore it like someone said in another post, and the rear should be fine?

how would this sound...
find a d60 with 4.10, 4.56 or w.e. then install that, and then have then swap the rear with whateevr it is to match the front so that i kill 2 birds with one stone by getting a d60 and only changing 1 set of gears..then i'd throw in better rear shafts.

gah this is killing me

i did a search, couldn't find it..someone posted it in another bumper thread where you build a bumper around it..it was a winch mount and you can put a 2" recovery mount in it which was right below the winch mount!

Back to your original problem with the stalling... I bet it is your carb, its just not made to take the off-road abuse. An easy test for you to show that it wasn't your distributor getting wet is to take it to some rocks similar to what you drove over in that water, drive over it and make sure your front end lands pretty hard. I bet your engine will die again, I had the same problem with my old edelbrock performer on drops and bumps, and also on steep angles... The cheapest fix would be to get a Holley Truck Avenger. I got one a few weeks ago used on ebay for like $160 and my truck runs better than ever off-road. A regular old quardra jet will work great also if you have an old one laying around... I grew up hearing how ****ty Q-jets were from all the hot rod guys but they are actually a pretty great carb if in good condition!

i loved my 77 qjet, when you open up them secondaries.... oh man.

haha yea... thats the one thing I miss about my q-jet, and even my performer... The holley truck avenger doesnt get up and go like a rocket but it sure is nice on the trail :)

so i want to order a drop pitman arm for my k10, (it has a d44) and i have a 6" lift...what would you suggest to order for cheap?

could having 3.73 gears with 37"s harm my 700r4?

I would regear it, what size tires do you have now? I have 6" of lift with 35's and a 700r4 w/3.73 and my tranny overheats when wheeling or driving long distances. I am not gearing mine because I am just waiting to do an axle swap.

your trans will apreciate it with 456. think like youre towing a trailer uphill every time youre driving. when you swap gears you will have awesome power. like a whole new teeruck.

gah i guess i have to dont i? alright, but am i going to need a new carrier with the sf 14 or d44? they are both open..and do you think i could do it myself? would it be too hard with it still under the truck? just need a little more info on.
