Hey CK5 Bros,

In my boat thread, I describe how my 454bbc blew up, leaving me stranded on the lake. Come to find out, the engine looks to be a truck motor, even installed with the truck pan. (wrong pan for a jet boat) Anyway, the whole thing is toasted....crank, block, damn near everything but the crappy heads. The machinist has a 427bbc installed in his personal boat he is selling, but is trying to sell them separate. He wants $4k for it, but I haven't a clue if that's a good price. Here are some of the things I know.

427, now 432 IIRC
450HP Dyno sheet
Steel crank
I beam shot pinned rods
Oval port heads
Full roller rockers
ARP throughout
Only Dyno time since build (I'll ask for one head to be removed and check)
says he'll swap out the tall intake with another aftermarket shorty
my distributor wont work, so I think he'll throw in the one he has
mechanical fuel pump
pump gas friendly (his race boat is 116 octane)
Holley carb
Currently in a jet boat, but has been sitting with no lake time, not sure how long it's been sitting.

I don't know the pistons or cam or anything else. I'm still waiting for a build sheet of some kind but wont get that till Monday when the owner gets back from racing his other boat. What other questions should I ask when I meet up with him again? He said if I wanted to reuse my own Holley 850, he would mount it and dyno tune it for free while I watch.

Thanks guys

you cant use just any motor in a boat. It will self destruct. boat motors run at 3000-5000 rpm or more ALL DAY. they have to be built to the gills to take it. Blueprint engines has a good boat motor for decent price through jegs also. I'll find the link in a minute

You could build your own engine for under 4K.

Also what makes you think you couldn't use your distributor in this 427? If you had a standard deck distributor and wanted it for a tall deck then it wouldn't work but if you had a tall deck distributor you can use a spacer and use it on a standard deck engine.

I don't know how to build an engine. I've taken them apart but haven't a clue how to piece one together. I don't know yet why I can't use the distributor. The guy, over the phone, said I couldn't use mine. :dunno:

HAHA you damn right, WTF?!! That was part of it, while going through changing the old things from the boat, but not completely the reason. Damn thing only has about an hour run time :doah:

I was turning about 4 grand when the engine went. I was only going about 55mph too

it was the wrong dizzy anyway.. small potato's compared to the rest of the issue..

i forget, is this a freshwater or saltwater boat?

If the dizzy is from a tall block truck engine,it could be reverse rotation, som had gear driven camshafts..if it were standard rotation it could be used with a spacer, you may be able to just swap the drive gear to a standard rotation one too..

that 427 should work fine in a jet boat. cruising speed in a typical jet boat is around 3k 3500 rpms, right where that engine is making all its torque. there are things that are marine specific like the distributor, fuel pump, alternator, carb. those items technically need to be ul listed for marine use.

the oiling system is the key to making an engine live in a boat, gotta have a oil pan made for the application and a good oil pump.

outa curiosity what shop are you buying it from? you can pm me the name if you dont want to post it.

since you're out of Upland you probably know the boat place, Rodes Way Boats, off 9th St./ Campus. They pulled the motor and will be replacing it once I have one.

The engine is at a shop on Peck Rd, starts with a J. I will be talking with them again Monday when the owner gets back.

Ouch, when I think I paid too much for my boat a a bult 455 old and new paint and new upholstery, I paid less than what you are preparing to put on your engine alone.:doah:
Mine needs attention to the wiring, that was the only thing they didn't finish before I took it off their hands, I should get back to it, I have let it sit for 2 years now.
I am even thinking to take appart my jet drive since it's the only thing they didn't go thru before selling it.:eek1:
How much did you pay for the boat?

well, now that the engine is junk, it hurts to say how much. Luckily, the paint, interior, stereo, pump, and wiring are all in great shape. I've only replaced the control and throttle cables. Boat market must've been low when you purchase yours. Around here, it's way high for even ugly boats. My family got this a couple years ago now. 14k, down from 17k. A (at the time) good deal for around here. :doah:

it seems the engine was probably pulled from a truck and put in the boat. The oil pan is wrong and was dented on the bottom to fit. May have harmed the oil pump. :dunno: The engine is the correct size, but this is probably not the right one.

Well when I go tmine it was actually good time but the friend who got it in a package deal with a carmangia he wanted and then inherited his dads boat, just wanted to get rid of it, so he made me a great deal. I paid $2500 cash.
It's an older boat: 19' wriedt boat 1970 vintage. Looks exactly like this one:

i live about amile from their shop. it used to be future marine, but they didnt survive this horrible economy, and rodes moved in from glendora.

jms racing engines?

Apparently you can !!! :haha: May not last long....

besides.... where do you think most of the 455 / 454 / 427's in jet boat's come from? The engine doesn't know it's in a boat......:D

boat motors run at 3000-5000 rpm or more ALL DAY

500 ft/lbs @ 3250 RPM

I'm sure a 454 HO would be happy at 3 - 5K all day...as long as it has the proper oil pan... :waytogo:

as far as rotation,,,if it needs to spin the opposite way, the cam drive needs to be swapped for a two gear setup instead of a chain... Cam still spins the same way.... crank just spins backwards.. I'm sure there are a few more details than that.. but I can't see why the crate motor wouldn't work...

Go hold a big block at 5500 rpm for 30 -45 minutes with out letting off at all, See what happens to it:whistle: Just because a motor can put out high power at redline doesnt mean you can run it there for long. Thats why a marine long block costs so much more than a general replacement long block of the same size. Not built the same. Sure you can build one to work. But theres that word again...... BUILT:waytogo:

I'm just saying I've sen it done (more than once) and it ends in carnage:thumb:
