Howdy to all. After months of searching, I finally found a 1990 K5 Blazer in remarkable condition that I plan on using for a daily driver and very occasional off road vehicle. I

After over a month of mooching "free" info off of you guys, I felt obligated to pony up for a membership today. Can hardly wait to have enough posts to put up some photos of my new ride.

Details: Nearly mint 1990 Silvarado K5 Blazer from Helena, Montana with 57,000 miles. 5.7 L V8 and factory 4 speed transmission. Only modifications from the one previous owner appears to be aftermarket AC, front and rear receiver hitches, tint to front windows, and extruded aluminum running boards. (Removing the running boards was my first modification.)

My mods: BDS 4" suspension lift, Goodyear DuraTrac 325/75/16 on 16x8 aluminum wheels, Warn manual locking hubs, Hella driving lights on custom aluminum brackets, JVC stereo/CD player to replace factory cassette unit.

Future mods: ORU steering brace (in the box, waiting for the mosquitos to calm down before I decide if it is worth installing.)
Recalibrate speedometer by installing DIP switch as per CK5 instructions.
Soft top install.

Input: Any suggestions are welcome.

I am planning to use this truck for a daily driver for now, with the eventual goal of it becoming a more capable off road vehicle in the future, as time and money will allow.

I have two concerns about the soft top mod. I have two young daughters that ride in car seats in the back. The seatbelt retractors are attached to the factory hard top. Shoulder restraints are not necessary for securing the car seats. Where can I find original type seat belts (just need the male portion) like what goes in the middle to replace those on the outside position with lap belts that will buckle into the existing female part of the lap belt? Or do I just go to aftermarket lap belts all across the back? My second concern is about if some sort of roll bar might be a good idea since the hard top will be off. I would need something that could fit under the soft top as well as the hard top.

Welcome Frog....

is that a factory manual trans?

I think if you've lurked a while already, you know you will reap the rewards of membership....check out all the other forums here too!

Yep, factory manual transmission. That was the deal maker. MM4 on the build sticker in the glove box.

Thanks for the welcome. I feel at home already. Now, just as soon as I can get picture posting privleges...

Welcome to the brotherhood :D

As far as your rear seat belt question, I would think that the belt set up from an older K5 ( maybe 88 and back ) should be able to swap in with minimal work. I know LMC sells new ones, but between the classifieds here or local pick and pulls you should be able to find what you need easily.

i dont know if you know this but the blazers have a built in roll bar in the back of the cab glad another texan has joined the forem

I believe his concern is his children in the back seat with only a soft top as protection. As having cut the "factory roll bar" out of my current K5 as part of the full vert conversion, I can say that I would not trust an extra panel or two of sheet metal with my childrens safety.

I vote to add some sort of a real cage, at least for the rear passenger compartment.

No built in roll bar, GM did go to a half top to make the trucks safer in a rollover but if you look at any truck that's been rolled the B pillar doesn't hold up under much, it's just sheet metal.

I have built bars to attach the seat belt too. Certainly not a full roll cage more of a roll bar or two just so they could take the top off and still use the safety belt. Kind of looks goofy if you just do a bar where you need it. a very simple rear cage with bars to hook the seatbelts up to should not be that much. Then you can take the top off and be safer at the same time

HF,

Welcome to the insanity!! :waytogo:

Mosquitos aren't too bad here....but for some reason this summer the deerflies are terrible. I've got a few more weeks of slapping myself in the head before they will taper off. :D
