i was drive home from a union meeting when my truck started to shake so i slowed down to 55. then boom the u-joint let go. took the drive shft out on the side of the road. drove home in 4wd. look at the transfer case and it crack on the tail housing. will try to get pictures up.

What t-case is it? Pics would help also, you might be able to have it welded.

it only happen a mile from my house. i called my dad he said to take out the shaft and drive home. hes a master mechanic so i listened and i think there was more coming out of the crack then the rear of the case.

pics would help.it suc to have that happen.but at least you were close to home.1 mile even if it lost all the fluid out of it i dont think it would have heated up enuf to hurt it.might be time to change trans case anyway.sye is always nice but its cheaper to just repalce the tailhouseing.unless you damaged the driveshaft also.then sye it and get you a new driveshaft for it.you'll know if anything else was damaged when you pull the old tailshaft off.

how do you drive home in 4wd? wouldnt the fluid spill out of the rear of the case with the dshaft out?

Depending on the orientation of the transfer case, it's only an issue on an incline. I had the pinion side yoke of a driveshaft shear off when a u-joint failed; pulled the driveshaft, put it in 4-hi, locked the hubs and drove 15 miles to the shop to take a better look at what happened.

This was with an NP208, and I didn't lose much fluid.

I've done it before pulled the rear shaft out of my 208 and road home on the front. I did lose fluid but not enough that it could have caused a problem. I probably drove 4-5 miles to get back home.
