hey new to ck5 I just inherited a 1972 k5cst. black with blue interior it has 22000 priganal miles and I have all the paperwork original window sticker and every thing. it is in very good condition it was keep in a carport it’s whole life but there are some issues that I would like some help with just so I don’t screw up it’s value. Like the frame has some surface rust and also some surface rust on some of the engine parts under hood. What should I do about those things. Also it has not run in about 6 years and has not been out on the road in probably 15 years so there are some leaks underneath. I am a diesel mechanic and also work on cars at home for myself but I have never restored a vehicle. I dont won’t to touch the body because the original paint is good and no dents the chrome is a little dull and interior is perfect other than steering wheel is cracked where to start thanks for and advice.

Well congrats and welcome, I'd leave it alone personally. Imho they are more valuable in unrestored condition kinda like antiques I guess. If it's all original it shouldn't take much to get running. Being a diesel mechanic I'm sure you know your way around a tune up. Just my two cents

Get it running/driving safe. Drive, enjoy but don't alter from stock as the value is in the originality.

So y’all would not coat the frame or replace rusty parts in engine bay just fix the leaks rebuild carb probably and clean gas tank out stuff like that.

Again, do what you can to make sure it's safe. But a little surface rust on some areas is a clear indicator of it's age and originality. You start repainting valve covers and this and that, it's not truly as much of a survivor and therefore not as valuable.

You need to ask yourself what your intentions are with the K5. If you plan on keeping long term take what I said and throw it out the window. It's your ride to do with it what ever you want. If you plan on flipping it for a profit, leave it be. It's worth more as a survivor.

It's worth what ever somebody is willing to pay for it. Going by auctions it could be $15k to $25k. Might want to throw a pic up or two so we can see what we are talking about it.

Yeah come on man! Pics! Pics!

Oh and I'm quite jealous

P.S. I bet a tune up & fresh fluids it'll fire right up

I will take some pics tomorrow and post them I appreciate all of your feed back and sure there will be more for me to ask thanks

Yeah change all fluids in it. Flush cooling system. It will probably need some new belts and radiator/heater hoses. Brake hoses and calipers/wheel cylinders might start to leak. Pretty much anything rubber that seals will be dried out. It may have issues right away or things might seal up a bit once you start using it. Oh and definitely going to have fuel system issues. Probably going to need the carb cleaned out and rebuilt, new rubber hoses, blow out fuel lines and drop the tank and clean it out and either clean up replace the sending unit. I'd change out the mechanical fuel pump also. The diaphragm will be pretty dried out and most likely varnished up inside. For a tune-up I'd maybe just throw some plugs in it for starters. Something like this probably has sentimental value so if it was me I'd just put some decent rubber on it if needed and enjoy it and maybe later start modifying slightly to suit your taste without ruining it. My '83 K5 was a grandpa hand me down to a kid that didn't like it and that's how I ended up with it. It was all stock and instead of me just getting it going and having fun I dove right into an axle swap and suspension when I wasn't prepared fully money wise and it ended up taking like 9 yrs to get it driveable.

Yeah that sounds good kinda what I was thinking but wanted some reassurance. And yes it has sentimental value to me it was my grandpas and my dad had for a while but he just decide to give it to me since I have always loved this truck. And also my dad had no were to work on it or to really keep it. Thanks a lot I’ll post some pic later.
