Just won't quit

let me know if and how you fix the shut off thing, my 85 k5 does the same only last a few second. usually enough time for me to get out, shut the door and get to the tailgate. lol

will do. may take me a few days to get into it since i dont have a timing light yet. shutting it off in gear does eliminate the problem for now though. just cant let that become a habit.

i feel you guys on bigger is better, but i really feel like the only way ill swap motors is if my cylinders are pitted up(they may be ive got low oil pressure and very little but still noticeable burning of oils). in which case i would prolly try to find an old ls1 ;-)

There are ZERO reasons to rebuild a 305.

How about if your local Chevy dealer is out of 350 crate motors?

Oh, wait, they're never out, because they have BRAND NEW, not used or rebuilt, crate 350's for ridiculously cheap. :D

How ridiculously cheap we talking? Because the ones I'm finding are around 2k. That isn't that cheap when you have a good running 305.

They use to be $1,200. Either way, I am not saying to not run a 305, just don't waste any money on it.

I think what they mean is compared to rebuilding your 305. if you 305 is running fine, by all means use it, but if you're going to dump any money into it then you are far better off going with a 350, even if you have to buy a block to start from.

I smell what your stepping in. Now if we were to put some performance parts on it and then one day find a cheap good running 350 somewhere, would most of those add-ons swap over to the 350? Like the distributor, carb, intake, exhaust headers, and so on? From what I understand the 305 and 350 are basically the same with the 350 just being bored out bigger? Tell me if I'm wrong. But if that is the case it seems like a lot of the parts would just bolt over to the 350.

A brand new basic 350 runs $1500 (freight included) from Jegs or similar retailers. For that price, it almost doesn't make sense to try to rebuild a used motor, even if you get one cheap. A lot of piece of mind comes from virgin components...to each their own, however.

My 85 dieseled until I adjusted the timing, and then had to adjust the choke because it was running a fast idle.
