When my Dad used to work on the assembly line in Buick City in the late 70s/early 80s he used to see a lot of TH350s roll by with holes in the bellhousing. It was GM policy to just put a "patch" over the hole if it wasn't in a critical area.
"K" cases were supposedly just a "higher quality" transmission with less core shift so the bellhousing wasn't paper thin. I, personally, don't care if it's a K case or not as long as the bellhousing isn't cracked or sound funny when you hit it with a wrench.
