K10: Built HP60/241-205 Doubler/tons of tube

I made some space in the garage and started tearing down the doubler to swap the 32 spline input for a 27 spline to mate it to my 700r...

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of stuff (picked this setup up off a guy on Pirate). The welds look good and everything is in really good shape. I'm not so sure on the intermediate shaft, I think I would have done it a little differently but it is what it is.
I'm going to take it to work tomorrow and get my boss' opinion on it. He isn't into four wheeling but he's been a machinist for going on 43 years so he knows a thing or two about metal. :)

In that picture the 32 is still in the case and the 27 is on the bench.

Not sure what the plan is yet. I remember someone else kind of calling dibbs in this thread earlier so if I sell it I'll check with him first but I'll put you next in line.
I was going to keep it in case I go to a TH400 someday but I'm really not sure. Give me a bit to think on it. :)

man a 700 with a 241 and a 205 going to be awesome!

no prob bob. its gonna be a while before i do my doubler anyway.

The big detail is whether it was heat treated after it was re-cut, most people don't and you leave a LOT of strength on the table without the heat treat.
 
I'm a heat treating noob. I use a product called "quick hard" at work but its just a surface hardener for bushings and such. If I were to machine this out, re-weld it myself and straighten it what are my options for heat treating?
I could find somewhere to do it but I'm not even sure what to ask, I'm sure there are quite a few different heat treating grades.

There are places that specialize in hardening, and some foundries have the furnace/oven to harden them. I used to do work for a foundry that had automated system that would heat a batch then spit it out into a conveyor belt then directly into the quenching substance. Thats fun to watch.

That was me, and I changed my plans so first come first serve. :thumb:
 
I got the input/planetary pulled out and decided to just keep going. I pulled a bunch of stuff off the 205 and got everything painted to satisfy my OCD. :)
I just couldn't have the doubler a different shade of blue than everything else.

I'll let it all dry tonight and tomorrow after work get it all put back together with the 27 spline input.

Put the 205 back together. I put the studs in for the rear support I'm going to use.
I'm in the process of finding the right bearing for my 27 spline input. I found out it doesn't use the same height bearing as the 32 spline I pulled out.

A company on Pirate called Trail Tech Fab makes them. It was $75 shipped IIRC for the plate, studs and hardware plus the bushing/tube/tabs. Not a bad deal if ya' ask me.
They're the same guys that make the infinitely clockable weld together transfer case adapter kits.

He takes Paypal so you can just PM him what you want and he sends you a Paypal invoice and once you confirm it he ships it out.
 
So I think I may have figured out the input/bearing problem. There are two era's of inputs/bearings. 1987-1994 and 1995 on. The old inputs use a tall bearing instead of a short bearing like the new ones. PLUS it appears as if there is some truth to a slight pitch change on the planetary gears. I took a closer look and although my 27 spline input I bought does drop into the ring gear from the 32 spline it doesn't mesh the same way the 32 spline input does.

So... anyone have a 1987-1994 NP241 27 spline input?
 
Well since things were on hold with the doubler until I can find the right input I decided to do what I've been avoiding for a while... get the new engine mounts in.

It went as smoothly as putting new engine mounts in can go. Glad to have that done and off the checklist. It was time, both of the factory mounts were split in half.

Split factory mount. Funny thing is this was actually the good one. The other one pretty much disintegrated when I pulled it out.
