K2500+6.0l=11.5mpg?

My dad's 03 2500HD, 4wd , extended cab short bed has always gotten 14-15mpg on the highway since it was new. It just turned over 302,000 this weekend, he replaces plugs with whatever GM recommends every 100k and other then normal maintence the engine is untouched. It is a auto (4l80e, maybe :dunno:) and has 4.10's with the stock tire size. Towing , mpg generally drops to around 10-12.

Diesel is still worth it. Up here diesel is a good 20 cents cheaper than gasoline, and I get over 20 mpg highway with my 07 Duramax. My best trip I got 24 mpg running at 65 mph up to the lake with my quad in the box.

I can't even remember that last time diesel was cheaper than gas. Maybe a year ago diesel dropped down pretty low where it was pretty close, but most of the time it has probably been 20-40 cents/gallon higher than gas.

Numbers like these make me wonder if a diesel is even worth it now.

That was with mixed stop and go with some free way driving. If I just go stop and go and not really pay attention I can get low 16's. I always reset that mpg calculation when I fill up and it's accurate.

10-13 is average for our 2500HD. 6.0l. 4x4. Ext cab. Automatic.

Doesnt seem to change with the trailer hooked up to it.

That is pretty good for the size, weight of these trucks. GM has picked it up with fuel economy in it's gassers in the last few years.

As stated, diesel around here hasn't been lower than gas in a long while. I haven't put anything in the diesel in a few months, so I don't know what it is right now. If I wwas going to be towing regularly, it would be a no brainer, but the next truck I get will be my poor weather driver(I will ride my bike all year as long as it doesn't rain while it is cold) and only tow part time.

I am interested in how the new scorpion diesel performs. I drove all 3 of the HD trucks earlier this year and really liked the super duty best. Ride was about equal accross the board, but the larger size of the ford(interior), comfort, fit and finish of the interior, and higher payload put the other two to the bottom of the list.

My new to me 99 f250 4x4 V10 auot crew with a lift and 315 tires got 8.4 on my first tank, half of it pulling my cucv truggy:(I would rather pay for gas though than reparing a powerstroke;)Luckly it's way comfy and it's not my DD.

Mine is right around 14 around town, i try not to beat the tar outta the truck like my old one...

We have an 04 Suburban with the 8.1L getting similar numbers (12-13 mpg). When we were looking at 3/4 ton Burbs, people were saying there wasn't much of a difference between the two (mileage wise). I guess they were right. The Suburbans have a 4L85E (IIRC) and the trucks with the 8.1L have the Allison causing the trucks to get less mpgs. Just some food for thought.

Since we're all comparing fuel economy numbers, a "bad" tank in my 99 Yukon (5.7, 4l60, 3.73's and ~32" tires) is around 14 mpgs. A good tank of all highway driving around 70 is 18-19. I think it really depends on how the motor was broke in. My grampa bought this one brand new just so he could break it in how he wanted, and it's a fine motor for that.

New plugs would help some, especially if the ones in there are old. My friend that helped me with my motor swap in the '81 K5 in high school swore by NGK's for new fuel injection engines. Something about the way they're built makes NGK's and higher compression FI motors work well together.

Higher octane won't do a whole lot for you because like what 38377K5 said, it takes more heat to ignite, but doesn't have "more" energy in it. That's why little turbo cars require 92 octane gas because of how hot the motor gets.

When my truck was bran new I broke it in HARD.:haha: First turn out of the dealership I pitched it sideways, then on the way home I flew through a intersection spinning the tires. Within 3000 miles I had the rear bumper barried under the sand, I lifted the front end off a whoop de doo and bottomed out the suspension all the way up and down.

And from what I've heard from other people, 17 is kinda low for your truck...

The 17 is stop and go traffic. I work at a dealership and every time or most of the time I get in one that has the DIC ( driver information center) I look to see what they are getting. I see anything from 13-18, where are you hearing that 17 is low?

Granted at times I'm not the easiest on the truck but I bet I could get it higher without even really trying.

looking here it's rated at 14 city and 19 highway.

Just joshin' ya a bit:wink1: 17 is pretty good for that, and I was kinda implying highway mpg's...

If it helps, my Yukon get's on the highway what yours gets in town.

It's ok it's the internet I wasn't mad, was just curious where you heard that.

I believe you on that I used to daily drive my 82 and got like 9-11mpg :haha:

13-15 city
18-20 highway in my Z71
5.3/4l60e/3.73's and 285s

Depends on my foot heaviness of the tank. ;)

Mods made to get up to 13.5 Highway...new platinum plugs, Air filter cleaned and re-oiled, tire pressure; rear 65, front 45. I ran 32 oz. of Lucas fuel injector cleaner through with about 3 tanks of gas. I got 13.8 on a recent trip (highway miles) of 385 mi. trying to stay about 70mph most of the time. Just last week I ran another 12 oz. of ther fuel inj cleaner through it with a full tank, and got 13.4 doing 75-80mph over 335 miles on the highway. So running at 70 compared to 75-80 don't make a big difference, not like it did on my 95 Burb. The rpm is only about 300 more at the higher speed.
I'm pretty sure my speedo, and odometer are pretty accurate compared to mile markers on the highway, and measuring the time to travel a measured mile.
I thought I might actually be less mileage showing as I have 265's on it, and it came with 245's.

I have a 95 K2500 with a 454 (7.4l). I am lucky to get 9 MPG on a good day. I would LOVE to get 11.5 MPG!

I just got back from a 1700 mile road trip with my 99 f250 crew cab v10 and got 13.7, 12.5, 12.8, 12.5, 15.4 this was my first trip without a trailer.

Mpg figures are only good if hand calculated, my 2 trucks with the computer figures were always on the + side, ALWAYS
Trucks will get worse mpgs pulling or loaded, ALWAYS.
Trucks will ALWAYS get worse mpgs loaded,ALWAYS
Computer calculated mpgs will always favor the auto maker ALWAYS
:waytogo:Just want to be clear here.:D
