Yep, the 4wd transmission case is a little stronger, but you need to be doing really bad stuff, or in competition to really need one.
Of course, its like certain heads, intakes, things like that, if you see one, cheap, grab it.

The main difference between the shops, is probably the old shop runs 40s, but is not heavy into the extreme off road thing, and the new shop does it all the time and breaks things.
Its a matter of attitude. You have some guys here who would not have anything less than 1 ton axles under their K5s, some stop at 3/4, and some run stock.
They all work, and lots of the stock guys never break anything, and some of the 1 ton'rs break things regularly.
