K5 Engine R & R

A hole saw about 1" or so in diameter can be used to make access to the bell housing bolts too,but you have to guess where the bolts are..
Seen one truck at the junkyard that had that done by whoever owned it--they used those expandable rubber freeze plugs to cork up the holes!..
You could use plastic plugs like they use on undercoating jobs too..

Well ok. I parted out an '85 K30 4 speed truck that didn't have a removable tunnel, so I'm not sure when it changed.
That’s interesting. My ‘83K10 and ‘84 K5 both bolt in. Maybe 84 was last year if 85 wasn’t bolted. :dunno:

Yeah, I agree, interesting... The '85 would have been a trick to slide the trans back when the shift tower wasn't going to get out of the hole quickly. I pulled the big block first..

But I pulled the ones out on my '90 Jimmy with just long extensions and the swivel impact socket, no body lift at the time. It went pretty decently.

I think 84 was the last year.
I parted an 84 k20 but can't remember for sure but I believe it was removable.
1985 they changed the column, the dash, and a couple of interior details.

Mine is bolted in! Yeehaw. So with that I think I will leave the 700r4 in place. Should make lining up the new engine easier. I just painted my K5 a couple years ago and it's not too beat up so I think I'll just pull the front wheels, drop it down and pull the engine over the core support. Good tip on bolting a wrench to hold the converter in. Thanks again all.
