Kandy Kane

78 K5 Build
This is the look I'm shooting for. It will have a small lift with 33" tires. ZY5 Appearance Decor package which is white hood and stripes in the picture.

Very Cool gonna follow your build Congrats
Yeah I'm looking forward to this build even if it's mostly stock. The interior is in good shape and it mostly just needs paint with minor body work such as dings. No rust on the usual foor areas or the inner front fenders. Texas truck so I think the dry climate help preserve the metal. The wheels are the wrong offset and look horribe until i can get them replaced with the stock white spoke PA6 wheels which i did find. I also considered going to a rally wheel which is a favorite of mine but the SPID shows PA6 so i should probably stick with those. Headlights are not working so need to address that first. Transmission does not down shift down when you floor it so hopefully it's just a kick down cable issue. For the 2" lift i may just just do the add-a-leaf on the front and 2" blocks on the back. I know new leaves are preferred in front but trying to keep the cost down even if it cost me some ride quality. Probably will do the 33" BFG AT with the white lettering to keep the nostalgic look. The hood is trashed and will need replaced. The front bumper is the wrong year from 81+.

is that the correct air cleaner looks more late model. Defiantly not the same as my 77's IMG_20220917_132520.jpg

No sir. It looks like it came from a much newer truck. But... I found the correct air cleaner from 1978 on ebay I just bought. I never thought in a million years I would EVER buy one of these 70s air cleaner with the small inlet. :)

not sure that one is correct either, my picture is just one I had. The snorkel is oval and doesn't tapper, also has a plastic tube to rad core support. and the hot air tube to passenger side exhaust. original cold air

I see it still has the transducer on the fender for cruise control. Be amazing if that still worked.

I searched some stock 78 Blazers on BAT and other sites. They all seem to have this air cleaner. Also stock 77 Blazers. This one I bought has a Feb 78 tag on it. I think they changed in 79 to the larger oval inlet. I'll keep researching to make sure I got the right one. Pics from other 78 Blazer engines:

I haven't tried the cruise yet but I'd be shocked if it still worked! I'll update this if it does.

Two bone stock 77 Blazers that has that same air cleaner. I wonder if the trucks got something different? The price these sold for is crazy!

I did see another stock 77 with the bigger oval. Curious now.

Well mine is a k20 burb. Weird that gm would make different air cleaners for a k5. I am pretty sure mine is original, the air deflector in the core support was missing po put the trans cooler in front of the air intake (idiot). Just ordered the deflector for my year and model fit perfect.

Intersting. I looked at some factory 78 and 77 factory suburbans both 10 and 20 series and they mostly had the small air inlet including the 400ci. I'm trying to figure out why some have the larger duct if yours is truly original. Weird. Honestly I'd rather have the larger oval with cold air duct for max power but I assume the small duct is factory for K5 and that's what I'm trying to duplicate close as possible. Appreciate your insight! I may need some more suggestions in the future. Thanks again Wes.

What are you going to use the truck for? Will you stick with 3.73 or drop down a step or two? Are you going to paint it yourself?

Just driving it around town, to work, and maybe a few shows. Wont be seeing many trails. Keeping the stock 3.73s which are ok for 33s. I'll be taking it to a paint shop.

Maybe a Ca thing. Or possibly the trailering package. I don't have the factory rpo sticker, but it has the 10k trailering special on the rear.

I found something similar in Denver but it's a true original ZY5 hood with the original factory stripes similar to the one in the picture below. Unfortunately it's a cream color but this will give me exact dimensions and placement of the stripes and hood ornament. Im going to document the measurements so others can duplicate it if desired.

Sorry not much progress on this besides collecting parts. Had to get project cracker finished first. :)

@Wes Harden Here is the stock ZY5 hood I picked up. Looks like it came off a yellow truck since the inner stripes should match the paint color. It does have some rust bubbles on the passenger front that will need to be addressed. Also took some measurements of the stripes.
