My names Ryan and im 19 years old, few years ago picked up a 86 k5 from my brother that i haven't really done much with yet as i have alot of other toys that take up my time, including my 80 camaro hard top and 79 t top camaro, and my daily 77 c10. Ill be subscribing, pending if my next check has a little extra on top for it, i dont like how i cant see the majority of pictures, although i do like the site so far.

My k5 is gray and red, 305 4bbl 700r4 np208 and 3.08 open gearing. When i got it it had an edelbrock performer intake, stock electrical quadrajet, and was smoking or rod knocking, when i purchased it my brother had the 305 out, and had bought a 75 k5 for the motor to put in the 86. I bought it as a roller, and well haven't done much. The reason he stopped working on it was because we had an ice storm and a tree fell and crushed the hood, front core support, and grille and other pieces.

I pressed the core support up the best i could to striaght without another 80s truck to compare to, still need to get a clip to get the headlight back in, thats all that's left there though. I bought a goodmark grille for it, never again, i spent more hours making that thing fit than it was worth, i should of just bought a good used one, but i only spent 30 bucks on it. I was lucky enough to find the correct color gray hood, and for 20 bucks no less.

Im still worried about properly hooking up the divorced choke 350 quadrajet to the stock 700r4, and was even throwing around the idea of a 5.3 or 6.0, 4l60e mated to my np208, but id have to swap the t case to a 241 iirc and change the magnetic ring that tells the tranny how fast its going, so i sorta gave up on that path.

I just dont like the 700r4, ive never heard anything but bad out of them, so while the motors been out ive also debated throwing in a th350, anyone ever done that swap on here? would the stock th350 from an np208 truck bolt right in and not have to move anything? I know where an 82 or so truck is with a th350/np208 combo. I just dont want to have to modify the driveshafts, if i have to go that far ill do a th400 np205 swap with 3/4 ton axles.

I hope this is the right place for introductions, I dont have alot of 4x4 experience, but im young and interested in learning tips and tricks. Im debating if i should fully trail rig my k5 or not, its pretty nice, granted not all original, has a few bubbles of rust in the floor, but really straight otherwise (Excluding the small dents on the fenders from ol' icy tree).

When it first became "mine" (excuse the mess of cars, my family likes toys, between me, my dad, and brother, were near 160, old man owns the vast majority)

After my first attempt at straightening core support, and put side mirrors on, when i was 16 or 17, stopped because my dad told me he would help me, still haven't seen that help, at least on this project. lol. At least i know where my brother and me get our laziness.

I still need to get a picture of the new grille and everything in, ill go snap one right now. I really want to get working on this, but kinda hard since my old man keeps filling the yard, and pretty much limiting me from where the 350 thats supposed to be going in this is. Right now its blocked by a 72 c10 and a trailer, and the 72s has a pretty good sink going on, so it will be fun getting it out of the way, after its moved i can simply move the motors into the back of my other truck, just gotta be able to get in there first.

Edit: I guess i cant post pictures until 15 posts or more, so i guess if you guys were interested, you'll have to wait.

Edit2. Picture of the new-2-me hood and goodmark grille, still need a headlight retaining plastic and put the lights and bezel back in.

just read somewhere from guys swapping from the th350-700r4 that you simply need the adapter and trans from an np208 and everything should be the right length, no driveline modifications. Hopefully might be able to find a th350 and adapter cheap, if not i know where a truck is for cheap with the setup, but it already runs and drives so id feel a little bad tearing it apart, but it has no title.

Welcome to CK5...and I'd stick with the 700R-4. The TH350 is no stronger, and it lacks the low first gear the 700 has as well as the overdrive the 700 has.

Rene

i dont think youll be satisfied with the th350. i liked my 700r4 while i had it, OD is nice.

Ive been debating keeping the 700r4 lately, im on the fence. id prefer the th350 because i feel its more durable, and the engine i have is from a 75 k5 that was already setup for a th350, and plan to use the divorced choke quadrajet, i need to set the two carbs side by side and see how different they are.

Correct me if im wrong, but for the carb, they can have places on the arm for crusie control, ac solenoid, and then kickdown right? The carb that came off the 305 was a quadrajet 4 barrel, but it has the electronic sensor bs, and its from a 305 so be a little under jetted for the 350. Im also worried about proper tv cable adjustment, becasue i know that can blow a trans fast. I will admit the better first gear ratio would be a plus, and overdrive cant hurt.

And keeping the 700r4 in would be easier than dropping the trans and changing it, then ive also got to worry about tranny cooler lines, and etc. I bought a 650 holley for it, but it was a mechanical secondaries like i run on my street cars, and holley suggests you dont use that with an overdriven automatic. I may just end up picking one of the holley replacement quadrajet style carbs and use the edelbrock preformer intake that was on the 305 in the k5, whats your guys opinion?

Still unable to post pics or urls yet. Gotta get my 15 posts in. Soon i promise lol.

Welcome to the site. Member up, you will love it. Cool to here young guys still interested in the K5 blazers.

Never been to tuttle, im new to the 4x4 world, ive never even drove my k5 lol. My brother used to climb in his 91 yj, stock 6 tuned to around 300 horse, 5 speed manual, 10 inch lift and 33s. The only time i went to wheel with him and his buddies we went to manhatten, and that was years ago. I like the idea of crawling over mudding, although i have alot of buddys who love to mud.

Where is tuttle located? Pretty nice area?

I love k5s. I have a speeding ticket i need to pay off (cop must of been having a boring day and gave me a 67 in a 55 while driving my camaro, my speedo was reading between 55-60 and i just swapped a 3.42 posi and a 4 speed manual from the original th350 that was down to 2 gears and a 2.56 posi, figure i was a young guy with a hot car, seemed like a nice guy though). Ended up at 159 after diversion costs, wasnt too bad, just like to keep a safety net in the back account.

This is my newest vehicle i have ever owned, sister has a 91 camaro that i drove for a while before she got her license, but was never really my car. My daily driver right now is either my 80 camaro or 77 c10.

Might have been where ive been then, ill ask my brother. As i said, only time ive went offroading and i loved it, just my bros got 9 years on me, hes 28 now and im 19, and he doesnt invite me out much.

Well i just sat the carbs site by side. The 86, of course, is one of those paper weight electronic quadrajets, and the 75 is a divorced choke from a heavy duty 350 (Same carb 75-79 IIRC). The throttle arms and everything is identical. The 86 carb has more vacuum ports, for EGR and other emissions lalygag i believe. Only thing is the 86 carb has a boss, two screws and a bracket holding an electric solenoid, of witch i believe is for the ac idle, am i right? and the 75 carb has no boss. If i could post pictures id show them, but not quite to 15 posts yet. Also, the 86 carb has a rebuilders sticker, so it may not even be the stock carb. Dont really care enough to run the numbers off it, i dont plan to use it. The 75 carb is missing a bolt on stud, i assume for either cruise, but it can be unbolted from the 86 carb and bolted on the 75 carb no issue.

Only worry i have is about that solenoid, is it important? any other way to mount it? aka a factory made bracket or aftermarket? If its needed and not made anywhere, i could probably fab my own if need be.

When the blazer first became mine.

k5.jpg

First started working on it, granted the entire time ive owned it thus far its had no motor, its always been a side project. I raised the center of the core support up via a bottle jack and 2x6s, and installed a passenger side mirror (brother stole the one off this when he bought his 84 c20, it was still his k5 back then, i just bolted another one on)

86k5621.jpg

new grille on (goodmark piece), still has the same flat tire (I have 4 brand new 32x11.50xr15s that came with the blazer included in the $800 dollar purchase price, i dont feel i did bad).

Although it is in roughly the smae place as the first picture, notice we rearranged the yard, I would have prefered it where it was in the second photo, but had a good size limb hanging above it that threatened the life of the k5, and since i already had one run in with a limb, i decided to move it forward, then we cut the dead trees from out front and graveled it, and my dad moved some trucks where i had this one parked, so its stuck where it is for now till i get closer to dropping the engine in and finally driving this thing.

Carb off the 75 350

Now i know that the cruise control lever can be unbolted and moved over (if i plan to keep the cruise) But what does that solenoid do? Is it for the ac or? The 75 carb doesnt have the boss to mount it, and the 86 does. If its not needed no worries, but im afraid it might be used in the idle for the ac, even though the plunger doesnt seem like it has that much movement. Otherwise the throttle shafts are identical and i shouldnt have any problem using the 75 carb and intake.

Pay day, just bought a years subscription! How long till its recognized?

Im debating after i get the truck running and driving, what the first mod should be. There are some 3.73 axles from a 90 blazer localy, they should be 30 spline unlike the earlier 28 spline, what would they be worth?

Ive also liked the idea of cab lights (5 orange ones on top) and dunno how they would look on a blazer.

Also a bull bar, i have one for a 73-80, but id need to buy bull bar + some kc daylighters for a 81-91. There's a new in box one for 150 local. Also thinking about the tube bumpers, but would look funny on a stock height 4x4 i think.

I eventually want to do a lift and 3/4 ton swap, but ill be changing everything out then, why im debating if the 3.73 axles would be good for now, or if i would be better off keeping the 3.08s then changing to 3/4 ton down the raod (even though that will more than likely end up being next year).

I dream too far ahead though, i need to get it running first. Im picking up a new timing chain and water pump to put on the 75 350 before i put it in my 86, wont be a race engine, but its an engine none the less and will get me by till i have more funds saved up for bigger mods.

very true....i'm only 17 (well turning 18 on monday), and I have an 86 K5, 350, 4 in lift, 33 in tires, 3:73 gears....the list goes on and on. my friends are all into stupid ricer imports (no offensive, i don't like it if its an import..personal perference) and they can't figure out why I like it. My "redneck" friends all have pickups and can't figure out why I don't sell my to buy a truck. I like my K5 and thats that. The only thing I'd get rid of it for is an old school Trans Am, or any Trans Am for that matter. (and then I'd buy another one down the line)...

anyways sorry for the hijack and the very long....drawn out blah-blah story i wrote. :p:

Know how ya feel, my dads an ex world record ahra driver, you can say i have a few toys lol (You saw my yard above). He raced from 64-82 and held 3 world records, campaigned 4 cars, and i can only hope to have the knoweldge he does some day.

Heres my second gen camaro (ive got 7, but most of them are projects or parts cars, this is the only one i daily drive and put money into, i have drove my 78lt for about a week when converting my 80 from auto to a 4 speed manual with help from pops (the 78 was supposed to be my sisters car, but she kills cars) and then my 79 t top car id love to get finished). I have an extreme dislike for imports, but in reality they are just car guys who like a different breed, but i tend to be pro-american goods all the way when i can, but its most of the kids who like those cars that piss me off. Darting in and out of traffic at stupid speeds, burnouts at dumb times, save it for the track, ill gladly run you there.

I have all types of friends, rednecks, street fighters (street legal cars we take to the track) to the rich kids who wanna be the rednecks and street fighters but end up having daddy buy em a car. Heck i even have a few friends into the import and drifitng thing (granted they HATE the shopping handle hondas).

Its all about trying to find the money tree, between minimum wage work and college, i keep trying to save enough to be able to get ahead on a few projects. I hoped to be doing construction this summer again like i did my junior year (2 summers ago), pulling 480/week (12hrx40hours a week), then went to a grocery store 250/week (30 hours a week @6.55) to a fast food joint im at now (20 or less hours a week at a high of 250 a check, 6.55).

I was doing the 30 hours a week with school, grocery store scheduled me every night in the deli and it killed me! Had to get up every morning for college, go all day, come home striaght to work, work till 10, home shower up and repeat. Never got to see friends. Where i work now, id like more hours, but weve got so many useless people on the clock its hard to get any, i need a better job. I wish i could find a local fabrication shop to go in and clean up, have them teach me to fab, i already know how to weld and use alot of the tools, plasma cutter, etc, just need more practice. Heck even a 4x4 shop, i just dont wanna go work for jiffy lube or some place that specializes in peoples daily drivers (sorry, no offense to anyone who works there, thats just my personal preference, ive done it before, and i give you props for being able to tolerate it, just not for me). I loved doing construction for my uncle, but he cant find work for himself, let alone me and my cousin.

Im currently going to college for a business management degree form a community college, then transfering to a bigger school to save costs, its more of a drive (hour and a half away opposed to ku witch is in my home town, so only about 25 minutes from my parents house west of town)

hey i know how it feels. I work 20-25 hours a week at my local parts store (employee discount :D) and work another 30 hours a week at my local garage. Oil changes get boring, but we do plenty of motor and tranny swaps, rebuilding rears, etc. so its not the same boring crap everyday. nice camaros, i've always wanted a "smokey and the bandit" Trans Am. I know they are essentially the same car, but i want the screaming chicken on my hood :p:. I own 5 cars right now. A 94 grand prix, 96 grand marquis, 89 S10 blazer and 99 blazer, and my K5. If i ever hit my 15 posts I'll post pics. I put a lot of work into the K5, my next project is long tube headers into corvette style sidepipes. I just have to hope some scumbag doesn't use it as a step or brush up against it when walkin by. (might get a little burn ;)) anyway i'd like to see what u do to your K5 and keep us posted on the camaro(s).

Sounds like your just as bad as me, my dad has bought parts for over 20 years from the parts guys, and hes always toying with cars, so i get parts at just about cost as well (most of the time better than the employees even!) I think im holding onto 17 cars right now, ive only sold two (and regret it, 84 c10 longbed and 76 shortbed, was going to put the 84 cab and clip on the shortbed frame since the 76 was ROUGH, and the bed of the 84 was rough, and make a little hotrod, but i was 16 and didnt have the courage, ended up selling both as i bought them.

Corvette sidepipes sound cool, just dont go rock crawling, your gonna have some bent up tubes haha. I love the trans ams and firebirds too, hard to beleive but every body panel off a ta or firebird is different from the camaro :doah:they look very similar though. Well decklid interhcanges i think, about it.

Keep working torwards 15, took me a little while, but i got there. Also think about a membership, i just bought one, and you get alot more pictures to look at lol. For 25, its a pretty good deal.

Anyone still read this? haha.

Well, im at a crossroads, its snowy outside im getting cabin fever. I found a set of 3/4 ton axles, 10 bolt front 14 bolt rear for 300, 4.10 ratio both open, or a set of 10 bolt 3.73s both open for 250, ill bet i can get either set for 200. Also a th350/205 for 250 (but th350 is questionable shape, supposidly rebuilt but left outside)

Im thinking keep the 700r4 because of overdrive, i want this thing to be a driver, but i dont want to blow it either.

I like a 205 for strength, but the trucks already setup for a 208, and it should be fine for what im doing.

BUt, the th350/205 comes with axles (and i assume i could put the 205 on the back of my 700r4 and run it, but would i run into tcase shifter issues?).

I have the 32s new, so im thinking staying with 10 bolt would be better due to clearence issues with 3/4 tons and 14" wheels. And since the 208s still useable keep it since its there and keep it simple.

I have been wanting to build an offroad toy, i have truck cab and clip, and if i got the th350/205 and 3/4 tons, found a cheap blazer frame and one of my spare motors i could build a fun little side project. I think this would be the best idea of them all.
