At what point to you go to greener pastures with a Suburban? 1991 Burb second owner 360,000 miles, 100k on crate motor and rebuilt trans, needs paint badly. No body damage, only has front inner wheel well rust hole.

It needs to come off line for paint, I have a shop and could get it to bare metal. Not set up for primer and paint but would like to be. Thanks

i spent hours and hours sanding down my failing paint, could have blasted it in a better situation, but it was well worth it. Not as many miles as yours but similiar, straight body, no rust perfect interior.

Do you still like it? And how does it drive? Before mine died it drove great, everything worked perfectly and I cant wait to drive it again. Best vehicle I've owned and cant wait to get mine back on the road with a new paint job and fresh rebuild. Hope to keep it for the long haul.

The rear end will need a rebuild, already replaced the axle bearing/shaft on the drivers side. To buy a 4x4 that seats 7 and can tow would be $$$$, I have a 14 bolt FF rear end for it, just takes time that I don't have right now.

The way I see it is one of 2 things:
If you don't have the space to keep it to get it back to good condition, or, if you can't afford to keep it because you need the money you can get for it? then sell it.
If you can keep it, and wait till you have the time or $$$ to do it justice, then keep it.
You can tell from my list, I am the latter. :doah:

How much do you like your Suburban?

I had an '87 Jeep Grand Wagoneer that, well, didn't pass smog one year. I had already bought the Suburban I own now, and at the time had no place to store a vehicle that needed work. I absolutely loved that Jeep; but the practical side of me made me sell it. I regret that decision, but it was necessary at the time. If I had a place to store that vehicle I sure would have kept it.

So, imagine life later on without your Suburban... would you regret selling it? I like the 89-91 grille style too... and I'm wondering if later on it's going to become more popular? As a "car guy", that's worth something to me too.

Anyway, good luck with your decision.

Bottom line is... You can't replace it for what it will cost to fix it.

And I consider paint an unnecessary repair.

I have a 86 GW also. The Burb been a great vehicle but it's time for paint and front/rear end swap. It can stay warm in the shop until all the works done, I just hate starting a project and leaving it for weeks because I work out of state.:dunno:

This right here. I am currently putting a new engine in a 95 Voyager my dad gave me. Why? Because the cost of the engine is far cheaper than the cost of buying a new vehicle.

With this running and a couple of 15 hour energy drinks, I should be able to get it to bare metal in a day or two.:D

I'd use a DA, no full pics of the burb, I'll take some during Xmas. Here's the only pic I have on the laptop, hood is in partial primer, top is down to primer in most areas.

doesn't sound too bad. my roof was mostly surface rust and my lower half two tone silver was mostly peeling off. Gonna go with white or change it up?
