Keeps overheating on just idle

sure sounds like a water pump circulation problem. I have heard of, but never actually seen, wrong direction water pumps being installed and then have overheating problems. IF the water pump is incorrect, as in the direction is not right, then the impeller can actually wind itself off of the shaft, if that makes sense. It's either that or the thermostat is faulty, which is not unheard of. Unlikely, but not unheard of. Pull the thermostat, check for flow, then pull water pump.
 
i am still on v-belt, this is the pump i ordered, which the description says is for a serpentine belt, but says direct fit for 87 blazer... Shoot, guess i need to call the parts store. Thank you for the heads up on that.


Says it fits an '85 K5 so theoretically it's the right one, as long as it wasn't boxed improperly.
 
The 2 pumps look different. Compare pics to see the difference in them .

And years ago i had a vehicle get the dist 180* out and fired up fine and run somewhat decent . But it run real hot and boiled the coolant out .
 
Just to throw this out there. I had a brand new, not rebuilt, water pump that wouldn't keep my engine cool years ago. I had very little heat in the cab as well.
It was a brand new unit from NAPA and everybody said that shouldn't be the problem. Turned out that it was the problem. I bought a different pump and all was good again.

Hopefully the new pump is the cure here, too.
 
Yes correct for vbelt, or the flat belt that does only alt water pump crank.
The flat belt that turns all the accessories, serpentine, needs the counterclockwise rotation water pump.

You want a pump that turn clockwise as you stand in front and look at engine
 
87 ran a multiple groove belt, for water pump, and alternator. It is technically a serpentine belt, however it ran the pump the normal clock wise rotation, using the grooved side of the belt. The newer tbi engines ran the water pump on the back, smooth side of the belt, turning the water pump counter clock wise. You should have the standard rotation serpentine belt water pump.

got the new pump in, flushed the radiator and flushed from the heater core also. I cannot for the life of my find a drain plug on the passenger side of the block. I drained it from the driver side and the radiator, but don't see anything on the passenger side. Anyone got a pic, or reference to where to look, i looked around the motor mount and didn't see anything.
 
Don't over torque the knock sensor when you put it back. Over torquing the sensor can cause erroneous readings, and end up retarding the ignition time greatly.
 
Didn't want to say "i dunno" and get stoned to death. haha... Best guess is the water pump, but i took the old one apart and nothing looked busted on it, but I don't really know what i'm looking for. It did overheat once more after the new water pump, but i discovered i didn't have the lower radiator hose on good enough, and i was having problems getting it to take 4.5 gallons of coolant. I fixed the hose, made some adjustments on the belts, (was getting a squeal first starting it up) and then would just run it for 10 minutes or so, and then check the coolant to see if i could add more after it cooled. Maybe there was an air pocket in there preventing it from taking all the coolant, i'm not sure, but it's cycling coolant, and i've driven it around town and the temp gauge has been reading good in this 100 degree weather. Now just need some highway time to triple check.

On the plus side, everything's been replaced cooling wise aside from the radiator and heater core.

It's hard NOT to get an air pocket when flushing all your coolant out. It helps to have a thermostat that has a relief hole in it, I think most do anymore. Glad you got it running cool again. Supposed to be 110 here on Friday and Saturday.
