this is my 86. i know the body needs a good amount of work. not sure how to keep it from getting worse. was told a spray on line is a good way, but i thought that was for rust free trucks. to prevent rust from starting. so any help would be great. here is a few pics thanks

Well for surface rust, I'd just media-blast or use a wire wheel to remove it then paint on something like POR-15, then bedliner it. Anything worse, and you probably have no other choice but to cut out the bad and weld in the new.

If I ever get a big garage, I want to lift the body off the frame and attack it with a vengeance. I'd like to go further, like somehow boxing in the tail pan so that nothing can get up in there, and/or fill it will something to protect even further, like expanding foam. Ditto for the little areas above it, where the ribs in the floor meet it and have that little gap up there. Basically I either want to block dirt and water from even getting in there, and if that's not possible or feasible, I want to make sure it has an easy way out.

Then I'd POR-15 the ever-loving crap out of it, and get a *good* bedliner sprayed on the entire underside to protect it. That should last a while... :wink1: :D

im thinking that would cost a lot. time no big deal. money right now is. may be i would be better finding something cleaner

Well...yeah, it's not cheap to replace all the metal, and fix poor engineering along the way. Unfortunately, these trucks were designed in such a way as to hold onto water and debris that gets up under the body. If it's already damaged, you have 3 options: 1) repair the damage and do preventative maintenance, upgrading where needed... 2) do as you suggested and start fresh with a rust-free body or 3) deal with it until it's unusable then replace it.

My tub is relatively rust free, compared to many on the road. I'm going to repair/replace as much as I can with the body on the frame. In a few years, I hope to take it apart and do it "right".

anything at this point

what damage is done is done(and it is winter)myself i'd spray it with Captain lee's rustaway and when it dried i'd blow some cheep black paint on it or cheap dog undercoat;),if yer bucks are way low find some roofing tar/thin with whatever you can afford and blow that on there(i guess?),,,,when you shop for undercoaters they start with cheepest being basically asphalt(not paintoverable without melting) plastised(you CAN paint over it but it's still black in color) and texture for matching finishes on rocker panels,,the cheapdog undercoater is actually the best for killing rust since when it gets hot it `gets loose' and soaks in
i'd sure worry about the frame and suspension first, body second,,PM me if you want more specifics i could ramble on but a quart of black rustoleum and a paint brush ~wouldn't hurt~;) Por-15 would be wonderful!!!!

whoa! please throw something on that frame!,that last pic looks scary!

I went to Tru-Valu to buy soem stuff to put on the bidy because it is rusting. Found some stuff called I think OSPHO. It is a green bottle and it said on the label that you wire brush the heavy rust but the light rust you can leave on and just paint over it. This stuff is suppose to stop the rust by a chemical in it that will convert rust to a chemical for metal or something like that. It is $20 a gallon and covers 600 Sq, ft. I will purchase tomorrow so I can work. Didn't buy it yesterday because didn't want to work.

Sorry for grammar need to leave asap.

it's a converter, por15 is an encapsilator..

Ryoken, so which is better? Converter or encapsilator?

I also saw the re-run of Gearz and he applies Chassis Saver by Magnet paint to Ted Nugents truck which had rust. He uses it and swears by it.

By the way $80 dollars a gallon

Well, contrary to what is espoused regularly in this forum, neither... The right way to do it is to remove it.. via blasting, replacing, etc...

But if you must coat rust, I prefer converters slightly to an encapsilator... converters do a pretty good job of stopping the proceding of the rust.. I've seen stuff rot out under POR15...

Spray waste oil on the frame once a year...that will help. Cheap!!! :wink1:

really? just used oil. that i have like 6 gallons of. never heard of that one thanks

It's very common here in town, several shops in the area actually will spray your vehicle. madmike takes his truck in every fall...

sweet, a good cheap way thanks

I'm gonna try the OSPHO on my rear axle that I'm rebuilding... should make it and the brake backing plates look real nice after I've finished knocking the dirt and rust off with the wire brush attachment on my angle grinder.

My body and frame is actually much rustier! Body support panels are not even attached to the frame any more! But where the trans always leaked a little fluid on the underside of the body... there is still original paint!

I would ditto what everyone else said and coat the crap out of the underside with either old oil or that oil based cheap auto store undercoating- tar junk.

Good luck! I will have to do a body swap but yours looks awesome by Michigan standards!:D

I was watching a car restoration project on TV where they dipped the entire body in some sort of acid bath to remove the rust, paint, and Bondo, then coated it to prevent rust until the repair and paint was finished. Anyone know where to get that done, and what it would cost? Any drawbacks?

My dad had a GTO frame acid dipped a few years ago, I don't remember the cost but it ended up re-rusting underneath the coating after. maybe it was just a cheap shop, not sure
Sand blasting has worked great for us!
