Well last summer Stephen (ORD) and I applied for the King of the Hammers race in Johnson Valley Ca. As luck would have it we didn't make the race entry list but we were selected to run the LCQ if we desired. They have allowed 11 spots in the race for those that place high enough in the LCQ. There will most likely be more spots open up for LCQ qualifiers as people can't make the race for whatever reason.

We are hoping to see 35 to 40 vehicles racing the LCQ with 15 or so spots to be claimed in the race.

Since my buggy is the lighter more nimble and closest to race ready of the vehicles in the stable it got the nod.

Most of what we are doing is maintenance and upkeep that I usually try to do at the start of the summer wheeling season, Change all fluids, check chassis for cracks or potential failures of a system or part, replace and rebuild as needed.
Then we have all of the safety stuff, window nets, new 5 points as mine are out dated, rear facing amber light, better fire extinguisher mounting, some fuel cell shut off valves added, electrical system kill switch and a few more small items.

With the length of the race somewhere near 100 miles with a good part of that being higher speed desert stuff with some big Whoops sections we are trying to focus our attention to shock and suspension tuning. All four shocks are getting rebuilt, re valved and cleaned up as well as re building and re valving the air bumps. We are lucky enough to be getting some setup advice and help from King shocks.

Well on with the pics as the details about the work get boring.

Right Front upper shock mount, shock protector bar (yes I have almost taken out shocks by hitting the top of the shock under a rock ledge) air bump mount and Baja Designs HID light:D.

Right front shot of air bump, coilover behind it, limit strap and general greasy mess around the king pin, and tie rod ends. The steering ram is also bent for some odd reason. Nobody knows how, when or where it happened:doah:

Rear brake line drops, dual exhaust pipes and the back of the fuel cell.

Rear quartering shot showing the added spare tire in its home for the race. All tools store below the tire. the sides have been removed for easier access and new skins will be built for the Race.

So far we have Offroad Design (Major sponsor), Colorado K5 (thanks Steve) and Mrk5 (stickers) lined up as sponsors. With more to come.

Awesome. I caught a bit of the coverage last year on Pirate. I will be looking forward to watching more this year. Good Luck!

I haven't followed KOH before but will now that y'all are in it. :thumb:

For the ill informed - "LCQ" = ??

last chance qualifer i belive...ive been fallowing all the 09 coverage on pirate...some high dollar builds in that race

Yes LCQ is the Last Chance qualifier. Just like the winter X games snowmobile stuff.

High dollar builds is an understatement. I have heard rumors of $250,000 race efforts this year.

I can't wait for the event. The whole week on the lake bed is going to be crazy.

Hopefully I don't have to have a serious talk with Jack Thursday night before the race:D, since I will be getting the car ready for 8+ hours of the worst beating we can hand it and still make it live to cross the finish line.

Good luck. I can't wait untill the 2010 qualifier at Rausch Creek. You and Stephen need to come over to the East sometime. :D

Sorry I don't do humidity.:p:

We always talk about making it east but then something good in the west shelves those plans.

Where'd the Iroks come from? :thumb:

Are you going to put a windshield in?

Long story short on the Iroks. These are the same tires I had in Montrose when you were there. Just on the blingy new trailready AL wheels. Some horse tradin and tire sellin got me here.

No windshield for now. It is still in the plans but not needed for the race.

Edit:

These will come off for the race and we are going to run Stephens stickies:D
Buggy should like the stickies.

I envy you. I grew up there. Started out riding mini bikes in that dessert in the mid 60's. 180,000 acres of play space. Rocks, sand, dry lake beds, 4 SCORE tracks. An off road heaven. Man I miss it. Bring back some dust so I can smell it again. I do not mean white dust.

Good idea, tear up his tires! :wink1: :haha:

Clay Kraatz is running the tank of a buggy Warthog in the LCQ. will be awesome to see how a beast that size fairs.

No pictures of this weekend.
I had to do a bit of tow rig upkeep. New upper Cognito A arms and ball joints, Napa Blue lowers, Cognito tie rods and ends, Cognito Pitman and Idler arm braces. Engine oil, Trans fluid and filters. 10 hours for a full Front end tear apart and re build along with the fluid changes on the 05' D max should make her good to go for the road trips to the Hammers.

We got all of the air bumps re valved and the stroke shortened late last week and Stephen and James(Dad) got the shocks torn off and two of them re valved and cleaned up Sunday. Hopefully this week we get the PWR fan packs from Poly Perf. and the window nets and intercom delivered so they can be mounted.

We leave for a prerun session in 1.5 weeks.

A few Pictures of the airbump work to follow.
