Knocking nosie comin from the flywheel/starter area

Guess, I'll pull it apart again and take another look, if I dont find anything might take her to a shop to see what they say.

Is it a metal to metal ticking noise? Could also be a loose starter support bracket...

Yea it sounds sorta like a lifter, but its comming from the ring gear area, i wiggled the starter and it didnt move, but ill have another look at it. The starter looked newly replaced so maybe thats what it is.

Yeah I had a similar noise...starter felt solid but as I was troubleshooting another issue I saw the bracket dangling... For S&Gs I pulled the bracket, noise went away.

So the bracket goes from the back of the starter to the block? or frame somewhere?

The Knocking Haunting

Well Crap.

Just two days ago, I was felling rather depressed about the progress of my 72. For therapy, I was reading through this thread and thought to myself, "well self, at least you don't have THAT problem".

Lo and behold, the knocking struck me this afternoon! DOH!

While trying not to hijack this thread, I post this because it sounds like the exact same issue as indicated here.

I will check the bolts and starter bracket tonight.

Any more thoughts?

So my TC only has 3 bolts holding it to the Flexplate... Please tell me that's normal. It looks like every other bolt hole is skipped.

Heres a story of my experience:

I bought my '85 K30 back in the summer of '96. While it ran good, it always seemed to have a slight miss. I put in new plugs, wires, cap and rotor and still had it professionally timed. Still missed.

Took it to another shop for a second opinion. Owner listened to it and asked me what the tranny and flexplate were like. I was like WTF and blew him off since I figured he fell off his rocker.

About 5 years ago I was revving the BBC up checking for the miss after doing plugs and wires again. This time I got a little carried away in frustration while revving a little too much and BOOM! Something didn't sound right while I was cruising down the street at 20 mph. Pulled over the road and got out to inspect.

Turns out during the inspection that I found 2 holes in the bellhousing. That 2nd mechanic was right. There was something wrong with the tranny/flexplate. So I limped the truck back home about a block or two away and parked it.

After finding a supposedly rebuilt TH400 with supposedly B&M parts in it over eBay and driving to OKC to pick it up and bring home, I finally tore into the truck and dropped the bad tranny. Upon inspection, I slid the torque converter off and the counterweight on the flexplate fell out along with a chunk of the aluminum bellhousing. Turns out the weight was not welded on properly due to being off balance slightly and therefore threw the whole rotating assembly of the engine off too. Never could figure out that miss but that little counterweight was the culprit the whole time.

Moral of the story? Stop everything on your truck and drop the tranny and check out everything before you do anymore damage.

I was lucky that counterweight didn't end up in the back of the block.

Your engine sounds like you have an exhaust leak, it could be a bad recording but that is what it sounds like to me.

It was the bolts!

All three were very loose...

Tightened them up and no more knocking!

Thanks again CK5

might I suggest going back in at some point soon and pulling each one, inspect them for damage, then reinstall with some blue loctite...
